the colonel's art xanderiley: how would you characterize your style? i see a lot of anime/manga influence, but i don't wanna assume. ColonelKusanagi: i try not to conform to a single style tho i do enjoy anime/manga it's just what keeps my head screwed on straight. as far as american influence, i do love burne hogarth and frazzetta. those were just what happened to be sitting close to me but i can mimic or reproduce virtually anything when i haven't my own idea to work from. ColonelKusanagi: It's always been somewhat of a compulsion. Anything from some ridiculous invention/solution to when i need something pretty or funny to look at. when i'm in the frame of mind virtually anything. when i'm not proximity to the pad helps whether i have a reference or not. i know i have a drawing of a blank tv with my feet in it somewhere. all aspects interest me. xanderiley: I have a story, and it has nothing to do directly with art, but you may find it reassuring. Jerry Lewis, the comedian, offered to teach a college course in comedy -- of course everyone wanted to sign up -- but the requirement was you had to answer why you wanted to do comedy -- there was a certain answer he was looking for. Give the right answer, and you were in. It turned out the reason he was looking for wasn't to make money, or even make people laugh -- but because you just *had* to...you had the compulsion to do this, beyond talent, beyond inclination. And if a guy who's left as big a mark on Hollywood as Jerry Lewis looks for this -- it means if you have the same urge, then you just have to keep plugging away at it -- because you have to. |
