Sci-fi NOT Fantasy

Book Worm Central
GreyLensman: I am a sci-fi nutter and object to Fantasy being lumped in with sci-fi. I have seen story-lines from sci-fi coming true, but am still to be convinced acout goblin, fairies, trolls and true magicians. Anyone to prove otherwise??

miss_lotus: i tend to agree terry.. i like both genres but i do see them as two separate ones. they are completely different styles with different angles and backgrounds, settings, blah blah blah. i wonder how the authors fell about being lumped together.

GreyLensman: It's nice to know that people feel the same way against lumping Sci-fi and Fantasy. I must point out that I do read Fantasy as well and as I have said to others, I like the idea of Anne and Todd McCaffrey infusing the two genre in the "Pern Chronicles" quite successfully. However to see this one must read the title "Dragons Dawn" first and "All the Wyres of Pern" last to follow the line of the theme.
I must admit that I have not read Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", this I will shortly amend.

Dae: I'm reading both Sci-fi and Fantasy since I was probably 5. My first and one of the most favourite books is "Sargasso of space" by Andre Norton. I like her other books which combine both Sci-fi plots and some lines of fantasy. I also like "Pern Chronicles" and "The Ship Who Sang" by Anne McCaffrey. From russian writers I like Alexander Kazantsev the most. He studied science and had some interesting theories but since in the Soviet Union there was strict censorship and he wasn't allowed to post his scientific works, he started to put his ideas into Sci-fi stories. And he succeed.

GreyLensman: Hi Dae, thanks for your comments. I must admit that I suffer from genre tunnel vision when it come to reading. My main hobbyhorse at the moment is Anne McCaffrey. I have read most of hers including the "Pegasus" "Acornia" "Freedom" collections and one or two others. As you may be able to tell by my nickname, I have also read a lot by E.E(Doc)Smith, especially his "Lensman" series. I have ventured into the Fantasy realm, but not too far. Recently I completed (with a friend) a sci-fi novel called "Those FedUp Dayz". Not ready for publication yet.
It was on our UK news tonight that sadly Terry Pratchett has been suffering with Alzheimer's for about a year.
Hope to hear from you again soon. Terry .D

Dae: Some years ago I read few stories. I had no idea who wrote them. Well, I found it out. That was Henry Kuttner. The stories were about the Hogbens, the family of mutants. They are really worse of reading if you like humour.

beamer67ca: I agree with you as well. Sci fi is such a rich and interesting genre that can have future implications on how we think and perceive the world around us .
But fantasy is simply good to read if you want to escape the world around you but, there are some books that do cross over into both such as Dune for instance.

GreyLensman: Hi Beamer, nice to have a fella on board. Yes I have seen the Dune films (brill graphics and effects) but as yet have not read books. However, that will be rectified in the future. I have posted a sample of my writing skills in my Blogg. Check it out and please feel free to comment to writer1@writer1.co.uk.
