nickb2: If you guys need any tips, I have been in the trade for 18yrs now and run my own little shop way up north. Have fun with the trade, it's a real bonus to be the guy that fixes everything, many favors in life coming your way. Keep at it and don't forget to stay on top of new techno cuz it goes fats in the auto industry. Next minute your out of the game cuz you slept on your ass not bothering to learn new systems.

GreaseMonkey: I agree with nick.

I was born with a wrench in my hand. There's not a whole lot of money to be made in this career field & you will bust your ass to get what little money you make.

Do you like cars? Want to be a professional mechanic? Forget it!

Do you love cars? Want to be a professional mechanic? Good luck!

It ain't easy, even if you have a wild passion for cars. But the rewards are insane! I recommend hitting the books hard. Soak up as much knowledge as you possibly can. Like nickb said: stay on top of the technology because it really does change fast! I graduated from the best school that money can buy in 2011, and I already feel like my education was dated. It's insane how fast the industry changes.

Start buying *professional* quality tools! You will spend tens of thousands of dollars on tools, and still not have enough. Get used to the idea. You can never have enough tools. I recommend starting out with Craftsman b/c you can get them warrantied at any Sears in the country. Don't let anyone lie to you about that. I have walked into their store in my work uniform and gotten my tools warrantied.
When you have the money, buy MATCO or Snap-On. Forget Cornwell. MAC tools' distributers suck.
Buy some good (read: Expensive) Ingersoll-Rand air tools. Don't cheap out. Air tools are what make the money.

And don't forget to study!
