MerchantPark: Good point stonecap. It's true, what today is called the queen, was once referred to as the 'fers' which roughly translates to mean counselor or adviser. It could only move one square at a time and only on diagonals. This changed around 1300 when it's mobility was extended to that of a Bishop. It wasn't until the 16th century that it's modern form emerged.
