old black and white movies UneverCanTell: Sorry, but I have to say that you haven't been watching good movies... It has nothing to do with being b&w or old, or new. There are brilliant, good, and crappy movies, always has been and always will. neptune: I've seen quite a few b/w films and alot of the time the acting is much better than in recent films. Back then they couldn't rely on cgi to make up for their bad acting so gave a 100% effort. Some b/w films though like the war of the worlds isn't worth a second view or first if u haven't seen it because the special effects are really what these sci-fi films r all about and with todays cgi the 2 versions just don't compete... The best b/w films I can think of from the top of my head r Psycho and Whatever happened to Baby Jane, my mums favourite, lol rosie12954: I love b/w films and that clip ...wow Bette is 1 of my all time faves...its tru there are good and bad movies in all times but I feel the old movies left more to the imagination...now we are all soooooooooooo visual like a murder has to be laid out for us to actually get it but in the old films the tone of the music the darking of the lighting..whatever the medium...u got it and it was just as impactful!! neptune: Nicely said Rosie I think once u get into a b/w film its easy to forget its not in colour and u enjoy it just the same. Some old films have been remastered and colour has been added to'em. The magic of b/w and the acting that was once I haven't seen in any of the recent films. I really enjoyed Avatar but I guess thats going off the subject. Most films I see these days r just a complete waste of time... I think the clip above is quite funny how Bette laugh's her head off after serving rat haha what a complete psycho, lol rosie12954: lol...that was a great film...yea...the oldies made u think and imagine...and to tell the truth most movies now are just remakes of the classics! yunki: thanks, fellas. I agree with all of you. New movies are so fast, no dialago and very bloody, but in old movies B & W the scenes are more carefully, and let you imagine many things. Masterpieces like 'Casablanca' 'To have and have not' or 'Days of wine and roses' for example, teach us something that today has been lost. yunki: 'Days of wine and roses' tell us the story about alcoholics problem. In fact it was the first time in the cinema shows that problem. Jack Lemon did a great interpretation. rosie12954: yes he did ...the scene in the greenhouse where he's looking for the bottle...wow...how impactful was that??? yunki: and what about Hitchcock films? The master and his masterpieces. Is awesome. He take care all dialogues and scenes and all little details. 'the shadow of a doubt', 'Rebeca', 'North by Northwest', 'the wrong man', all of them are amazing. You can't stay seat down because you are in tension. neptune: I used to love his old series Alfred Hitchcock Presents... I'd say the first psycho film was the best bw one he did but I can't think of any others apart from when they turned colour. davyboy_1: my top b&w movies 1 casablanca (good ole bogy) 2 citizan kane (orsen whelles) 3 the third man (orsen whelles again) 4 saturday night and sunday morning ( a british movie) 5 the last picture show ( american actually starring cybal shepard in her young days) 6 and of course "psycho" the most intellegent horror ever made by the master of suspence Hitchock TheMusicMan: I love films in general, and am currently going on a b/w movie spree! I don't know if you guys have watched movies with James Stewart in them, but he's probably one of my favourite actors ever. His 'Mr Smith goes to Washington' and 'It's a Wonderful Life' are masterpieces. Also, sames goes with Humphrey Bogart and Jack Lemmon in some extremely memorable performances in 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'The Apartment' respectively. Hats off to the black-and-white generation. And, if you guys haven't watches Akira Kurosawa's films, please do right away! His films have captured human emotions better than any I have ever seen. He is also my favourite director ever . That's a lot I've typed in already. I'm just very happy to see so many movie lovers around here . Cheers everyone! davyboy_1: also some of my favorite comedies are in black and white , people seemed to be just more naturally funnier in the old days try these comedies out for size "City Lights" or "The Gold rush (1925)" starring Charlie Chaplin The General.[Buster.Keaton].(1927) Way Out West (1937) laurel & Hardy ( this was put into colour afterwards) Some Like It Hot(1959) davyboy_1: And a great actor in the silver screen was James Cagney and this was my favourite film he starred in ( brilliant gangster films ) The Public Enemy 1931 TheMusicMan: Yeah! I have watched the ones you have mentioned except for The Public Enemy. Chaplin's films had a very deep meaning to them, especially during the time of The Great Depression (Modern Times) and then the WW2 (The Great Dictator). Another one of my favourite B&W comdeies would be 'It Happened One Night'. I guess all romantic comedies are inspired from this one . | Movies Chat Room Similar Conversations |
