You were correct before to put it as a statement and not a question, because they can simply say "the answer to your question is yes we're going to hang you". but if you said a statement as "You are going to hang me." Then it will put them in a position where they can't do anything because if they hang you then your words will be true (in which case they should shoot you since "truth" = shoot) and if they shoot him then the words will be a lie (in which case they should hang him, since "lie"=hang).


Here's another one:

A slim crocodile living in the Nile took a child. His mother begged to have him back. The crocodile could not only talk, but was also a great sophist and stated, "If you guess correctly what I will do with him, I will return him. However, if you don't predict his fate correctly, I'll eat him." What statement should the mother make to save her child?

Comrade_: You don't answer with a question, by making a statement you put the prison officers in a predicament. They can't shoot or hang him. I'll put it simple for you to understand.

truth = shoot
lie = hang

Making the statement "You are going to hang me." Is neither truth nor a lie.
If they do hang him then it will mean he was telling the truth in which case the would have to shoot him. If they shoot him then it will mean he was telling a lie in which case they would have to hang him...and there it goes around in a circle and the prison officers are left to do nothing.

Do you understand now or I'll have to break it down further for you...dummy...?

Stewart75: Without the question mark... i.e. one of these things (? dummy)... it means it's rhetorical, meaning it does not require an answer... same as a statement... which means his statement is true... so they're are now gonna shoot him...

The question mark, makes it an answer without making it either true or false... dummy...

A rhetorical question has it's purpose, it is a figure of speech used to be persuasive without requiring an answer but it is put for the person to think deeper (it'll not fit because the prison officers don't need to think on whether or not they're going to hang you) it is not the same as a statement. A statement is declaring something, he is declaring that he will be hang (which will either be true/false based on the future, since it is future tense).

Do you understand the difference in the situation?
"You are going to hang me? vs You are going to hang me."
Tell me which part confuses you.
