Sub V.S Dub Katz: Ok ok - This debate is as old as Anime is - So I feel this is something that should be added to every Anime discussion. I prefer Sub myself - Translations when spoken are often even worst then when written. Ichi, Nee, Son, GO!  Katz: yup! I understand that it is very difficult to translate from Japanese to English because they are so different but the voices are usually TOTALLY off then what they are supposed to be. It almost changes the entire character. Japanese us a SOV lang. Which mean Subject Object Verb. English is SVO. Subject Verb Object Japanese - I Bread eat English - I eat Bread Confusing ne? Katz: Has anyone ever watched a Anime in Japanese and then when it's dubbed over to English one of the characters are changed from male to female or vice-versa! In Banner of the Stars - The character Sobaash (The Head pilot under the captain Lafiel) starts off as a male in the Japanese version and due to a mix up in English production they portray him as a female.... It's strange to see this series on Tech T.V and see this character acting and talking like a girl ....  AdamLinz: Me for the longest time had always watched dubbed anime but once I started to watch subbed I fell in love with sub. I have gone to watch some dubbed to hear some of the voice overs. its just painful to listen to. I think the only show I'd rather watch in dub is dbz bc I never watch an episode in japanese until like a month ago and to me goku sounded like a pansy. Katz: hahaha! omg Vegita is even worst too in Japanese, if you ever listen to them when combined it just makes it even funnier. You should sometimes just for shits and giggles sake.  KuroNeko_PT: As a fansubber translater i say dubbing anime its killing anime, but the same goes for a few sub's that we find in DVD that say a thing in japenese and they subbed a thing not even close, that why fansub's rock from fan's to fan's  shaina_M_duel: i prefer dubbed there are some anime i cant watch dubbed, but the subs are not always as accurate as one would like to believe, but there are some things that need to be watched subbed, EX: Princess tutu. KidBlaze98: Call me a stupid American but I usually prefer to actually watch the show, not read. If I'm reading I might as well read the manga, if the show's made after one. That being said, I do agree that do that we Americans often miss the mark when it comes to voice acting. Some of the worst examples being Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh or almost anything made by 4kids. It's been excited well at times. The Dragon Ball series is still the gold standard and other series like SGT. Frog and Naruto(yeah, I said it). I think the main problem is that anime is still comparatively small in the US. Yeah, nowadays we've got conventions and shitty live action movie adaptations. Another thing is that because the US and Japan differ a lot in their cultural opinion on what's appropriate for kids, prime example being Dragon Ball. Seriously, if that show were air unedited today there would be lawsuits up the ass from angry parents. But I digress, whether or not you prefer dubbed or subbed is a personal choice. However I think that most, if not all hardcore anime fans go with the original "Un-Americanized" version. |
