When I went to Vietnam in 2013 She made me a big dinner and many relatives came over to eat with us. I was going to stay 4 days but after the first night the police came to her house and said I had to get out of town. I understand to visit smaller villages foreigners must first get permits as well as a guide. I am in Thailand, and I tried to go to Saigon to renew my visa, when I arrived at the airport I was refused to get on board as I did not have a Viet visa. They do not issue entry visa's to Americans, we must apply for a visa at least 4 days before planned entry. I like Cambodia as well as Laos, Where I was in Siam Reap most everyone was really friendly, spoke English reasonably well, even preferred US dollars. Laos was not quite as friendly as Vientiane did not seem as much a tourist destination.
