Dazza1973: Hi Bimba. Are you roughing it like camping, back packer style or traveling in luxery? One of the best tourist places to visit is Byron Bay, in northern New south Wales. Byron is the most northern point of the mainland.
Other places of interest, on the East side, is Cairns in Queensland. I snorkled on the Great Barrier Reef and the image is just awesome. Seeing the colourful fish against the reef is one of the most treasured images you can see. Some companies also have scuba diving. If it's a first time at scuba diving, they can show you the basics. I couldn't as I'm an asthmatic.

Of course there is the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Queensland seems to have the most tourist attractions. (Unless I see this as I'm a Queenslander)...Gold Coast has Dreamworld, Seaworld, Movie world. Sunshine Coast has UnderWater World and Australia Zoo which is owned by the late Steve Irwin's family.

I've been to Sydney twice in my lifetime. Once was coming home from Bangkok. The other time was a mystery flight which meant I spent a day there.

A place I'd like to see is around Coffs Harbour in New south Wales. This place seems interesting.

Anne aka Mags: Hey Bimba. If you head to Victoria, Melbourne has some brilliant stuff. Great place to explore there. Plus my home town has Sovereign Hill which focusses on the days of mining here in Ballarat. It also has a night show that explores the famous Eureka Rebellion.

Tess8: Everything about Australia is wonderful, the east coast by far the best tourist places, from Queensland to Victoria. Austrlain cities are wonderful especially Melbourne & Canberra they are so easy to get around. Make sure not to stick to the cities the country areas have so much to offer. A trip through the Hunter Valley is awesome as well as down through the Snowy mtns areas and South Coast. Hope you enjoy our country.......if in the country just be aware of our snakes n spiders,,they are more scared of you, but you need to be aware they are out there. Happy travels

knightd73: Apart from one knee jerk reaction about Western Australia (WA) its a nice spot Perth (capital) doesn't have the hustle n bustle of either Sydney or Melbourne.

Locally Perth has lots of sights to see, Rottnest island (rats nest in Nederland) king park cafe strips of Fremantle Subiaco or North Perth. Anther thing depending on your liking is the old Fremantle prison tour and depending on who is on the tour you may see the gallows some very nice beaches if they take you fancy main ones being Cottesloe or Scarborough or if you like swanborne (the clothing optional beach)

The main thing you need to realize is that it will be summer and depending on where you go it will be very hot or wet n humid - northern parts will be in the wet and most roads become impassible even with four wheel drives.

Inland areas esp of WA will during summer be very hot and you NEVER attempt to hitch hike in remote areas - some roads only get 1 vehicle a day at best or maybe 1 every 2 or 3 days

South west of WA is very pleasant to look at esp the tall timber around Wapole to Manjimup any travel in WA is probably best done using a rental car yes there is public transport (usually by transwa) but only operate every second day or weekly depending upon your destination

Anywhere around the southern coastal part of Australia you will always have the threat of bush-fires, so always think about your surroundings and have an escape plan. this is especially important if your travelling alone inside national parks or away from major towns. yes it is possible to have a bush-fire inside a suburban residential area too !

Snakes & spiders if your sensible don't go walking through thick grass or putting hands into hollow logs etc you will be fine, snakes use vibrations to alert them of danger and unless you really corner or tread on one the chances of being bitten are minimal

Keep covered up a good pair of sunglasses long sleeves offer just as much protection from the sun as sunburn cream.

and mostly ENJOY YOURSELF !

max_opp: Humour does not come into the equation, when you have a potential visitor sincerely inquiring about our great country only to be told that Perth is in Tasmania. Sorry I fail to see the humour in that, it's crass stupidity!

Killryde: Actually max, there is a Perth in Tasmania, do abit of research before you call someone stupid next time, also, tricking tourists with outlandish tales (i.e. dropbears) is a commonplace thing, being an Australian you should know that.

max_opp: Killryde it was assumed you were talking about Perth W.A which you described as a waste land. If indeed you were discussing Perth Tassie then you should have made that clear.
I never used the term drop bear and unlike you I am proud of the lot, including your so called wasteland. In visiting any country you take the good the with bad. In the meantime it's a lovely day in Melbourne so please enjoy.
