iristhevirus: Observatory Mansions by Edward Carey. Random trip to Library, found not one but two reasonably interesting books on the shelf by said Edward Carey. Read Alva and Irva first, enjoyed it and am pleasantly satisfied with the near-macabre all-pervasive loneliness of Observatory Mansions thus far.
