Vegetarians/Vegans

_Pikelet_
_Pikelet_: I'm just wondering what people's general thoughts are on vegetarians and vegans?

I had a guy at a cafe today call me a tree hugging hippy (which i kinda am, but that's beside the point) for asking if they had any vego options on the menu.

I'm not an outspoken vego, I don't tell other people they should stop eating meat...and yet even when I am just placidly trying to get some lunch I cop flack for my own personal choices.....hmmm.

and could never see myself eating meat ever again , i find that some restaurants have poor vegetarian options avaliable and we are aa neglected comunity ,

Kalla: I pretty much get the same, and I am only a vegetarian, but I've come to realise that no matter what you eat, there will always be someone who doesn't agree with your lifestyle. Simply put, if others have a problem with it, then let them. It's not like their thoughts or actions hurt you in any real way

gonemo: Being vegetarian you just kind of get used to being different. I cringe a little inside when people ask..it happens everywhere but mostly at restaurants and grocery stores when people see what you are getting. After awhile you get used to it. I just be polite. I say its a personal choice and thats usually enough people don't really want your life story. If they press though I tell them I love animals and can't eat them. Sometimes people ask because they are curious and don't know how to get started themselves so I always try to be open-minded. I always respect others and never put down how they choose to eat and usually they are just as polite back.

Awhinanastyle: Hey guys. Im a new vegetarian. I used to be the ambassador for all things meat HUGE fan of steaks etc. And then I came to the UK went to a chinese restaurant and guess what they brought out? DUCK. That was me! No more meat. So firstly guys, there is a difference between vegan and vegetarian. Vegetarians do not eat meat whereas Vegans do not eat meat AND animal by products i.e egg. Vegetarians do. Now in terms of diets, I've found that Indian Vegetarian-based diets are incredibly tasty however they are high in cooking time, sometimes high in fat which means less benefits. Turkish moussaka is really nice as well! Its funny because I used to think that vegetarians would survive on next to nothing you know? But I swear Ive been exposed to more types of food as a vegetarian than as a non-vegetarian i.e normal eater. But I agree with comments above. In some places, there is no catering to vegetarians at all! (and i still cringe when i have to explain why ive gone vegetarian. moral choice really!)

dellprinter: Hi all
I was a vegetarin for many years about 10 in total. Today i struggle to be a vegearian because my partner loves meat and im the chef so its hard to please us both. The reason i went vegetarian is because i think holding animals in factory pens, bad transport policy, and over use of hormones is unethic for both animals and factory workers.

I have strange views on animals anyways, I think its wrong to own an animal of any type unles it was going to be destroyed.

Im not against the ethical killing of animals that were allowed to roam free but i guess i wouldnt like to kill my dinner.

I have found when i was a full vegetarian that meat eaters scoffed at me and called me a hippy when im not one bit like a hippy.

I have found vegetarians and vegans that i have met to be arrogant, dictators with no sence of reality of how normal people function, eg. the ordinary working mother does not have hours to wait for organic vegetables to boil.

One reason to become a vegetarian if only temporary is to clean out your body. Meat causes your feet and armpits to smell.

So i guess moderation is my point, dont eat steaks everyday, and have a salad on occasion and if you can source your meat products from the person who kills them or from an ethical procedures factory but im only making the latter up. lol

mauzie_: Ya I'm vegetarian and really don't get peoples problem with it! It's like anything a bit different to them is just weird and wrong. I've been vegetarian for about twenty years(since I understood the concept of meat!). I love animals and just can't stomach(pardon the pun) the thought of eating them. Restaurants can be a bit tricky but it's getting a bit better.

dellprinter: Hi mauzie,

Being a vegetarian in ireland is like a muslim being an alcoholic lol.

Maybe you have heard of it there is a product called Quorn and its a good substitute for meat. Theres some indian food to in tescos thats meat free but high in calories.

Oh ya i have been eating brown rice recently, takes half an hour to cook but is filling.

N.E ways save the bacon and swine flu is a good reason not to eat it lol

bye

_Awhinanastyle_: I've searched through A supermarket here in NZ and I haven't come across ANY Quorn!! I was in the UK for a good 6 months and was a big fan of the meat substitute and am at a bit of a loss now!
A good friend said I should try raw white basmati rice. It isn't bad. STRICTLY for snacks though.
Whats the most interesting/delicious meal you guys have had?

dellprinter: A simple meal i make is stir fry.
I use brown rice and it takes almost 30 mins to cook
For the veg, some green and red peppers, baby corn on the cob, mushrooms and instead of meat I use cashew nuts. cook the veg in shallow sunflower oil for about 5 mins or less add the nuts just to get heat into them and then add a drop of soy sauce.
Simple easy and nice

_Awhinanastyle_: Really Breezy? Wow.
I myself am a 'new' vegetarian in the sense that I became a vegetarian in March. We went to a chinese restaurant and they served duck. I've never eaten duck and was put off entirely on meat. However, after reading an article about the importance of meat/fish, I've tried to incorporate some into my diet. I've only been able to manage tuna. I can't stand any other meat/fish. Are there alternatives for both?

_Awhinanastyle_: Hahaha. I suppose theres nothing wrong with Duck. For me it was because I'd never been served duck before and I suppose I got a bit of a shock from it. I didn't order it one of the guys I was with did and it wasn't very appealing. It didn't look right if that makes sense.
I still go to Chinese restaurants. Well occasionally. HELLO rice!
