hornchurchmale: bear in mind if it was in fact legal to eat human flesh..then Americans would be banned from sale anyway! reason is excess PCB's etc from food stuffs they eat. it builds up in tissue and cannot be expelled hence unfit for human consumption. Japanese on other hand are considered wholesome.

hornchurchmale: christianity is as guilty over time as Islam is today. (and was) not all religions support violence and killing of those not accepting its teachings and laws. Bit pointless trying to debate anything such as death with a religious person whom is heaving into it a they will always use get out of argument free card by saying its all down to 'god' just as Muslims do. whereas reality is its mankind's ( each person) individual choice to hurt others or have ideas or beliefs in 'god(s)' water spirits .totem poles etc just don't agree to trying to shove religion down other peoples throats or try and say your ideas or beliefs are more right than others whom may disagree.

hornchurchmale: pointless trying to debate anything with religious fanatics. they seem to think they alone have some sort of 'know it all' connection with the universe and cannot take anything that might oppose entrenched views. sad.

Adam Southworth
Adam Southworth: I don't know if I regard cannibalism as an absolute evil. I think the cultures which practiced it might have reduced the value of human life, especially if they killed people and consumed them en masse. That said, some people saw cannibalism as a desirable fate for themselves and those they loved. Many tribes of the Americas saw cannibalism as a way to keep their loved ones with them rather than "leave them to rot in the cold earth".

I suppose Christian societies have an ancient taboo against cannibalism. If you believe your own body will be resurrected, don't trust St Paul's account of a "spiritual body"-- and your body is eaten--the flesh from your resurrection body becomes part of someone else.

As for other moral absolutes, I think the right context might soften our resistance to cannibalism. I read a history of cannibalism a while ago. One story was an account of The Medusa, a French frigate run aground off the north-west coast of Africa. The two lifeboats aboard could only hold 250 of the crew of 400, so a raft was constructed from planks and rope. The officers aboard the two lifeboats tried to tow the raft, but "after long deliberation" decided its weight "unnecessarily" held them back and cut the raft loose.

Imagine you were aboard the raft. You've been cut adrift at sea far beyond sight of land. The weight of 150 people drives the raft three feet below the ocean's surface. You are waist deep in water with a few casks of wine, no food, and no way to move the raft. Twenty-five people die on the first night; some near the edge are swept overboard, while others drown when their feet fall through holes and catch in the planks.

The next day, a man goes mad and starts hacking at the ropes which bind the raft together, and attempts to subdue him lead to full-scale battle between the rest of the survivors. Blades are drawn. The fight lasts long into the night. At dawn the next day, sixty-five more people are dead and most are left wounded, some more severely than others.

As the days pass, you feel such agonizing hunger that you begin to eat your own clothes. You soon realize you'll die if you don't find real food. Imagine the exhaustion, despair and desperation. The dead who drowned or died in the battle are strewn around you. The junior officers find a way to cook the flesh with gunpowder, dry rags and a tinderbox. In that context, I suspect most people would rather eat human flesh than starve to death.
