Restaurant Peeves !

LouieInTexas
LouieInTexas: We've read what wait staff "hates" about us customers, so what do you customers dislike what wait staff do ?

Mine is not asking if I do want a refill
Asking what I would like as SOON as we sit down
Asking every 3 minutes how we are doing
Chewing gum
numerous facial piercings or greasy looking over the face Emo hair styles
and fixing their hair/ponytail, sneezing or coughing into their hans and NOT washing them.

As for other diners,

LOUDness on thier phones
Smacking/slurping
Noisy kids that they do not tell to hush
hacking up a lung gobber or blowing their noses...

flatlander17: Sounds like most of these things are management problems. Poor training and lack of health code knowledge. I have almost always had a great service experience going to a restaurant that charges around $100 per a person or more. There are two things that I have noticed about wait staff, oops, never mine, I was thinking about Hooters again. :-)

Miss_Chrys: I hate when your close enough to an open kitchen and you can hear the service bell ring. Worse when you get an impatient chef and they double bell. This is a mega pet hate as I worked in Restaurant and Hotel industry for years

I hate when the staff are standing around talking to each other when you are trying to get their attention and your basically oblivious to them

Being seated by either the main door (in winter this bites), near the bathrooms or their side station.

I hate being rushed out also. If I am out for a meal and your busy, do not rush me to get in and out so you can turn the table. Your tip will sufffer considerably.

Re: Silver and the touching face and hair that makes me furious too. Soooo un hygenic.. Chewing gums a bad one too..

PralineQueen: I agree about coming and asking how you're doing every 3 minutes... I'm glad they're so attentive but for the love of god, go away and let us eat!

AlishaLucky: I more hate things about the atmosphere- cluttered dining rooms make me feel like it's dusty. I hate loud music while eating, or no music at all, and I hate hate hate smudged wine glasses and water droplets on cutlery. I like a family atmosphere, and places that accommodate children with high chairs (which are great because the kids can't get up and run around) and somewhere discrete to park a pram. I also dislike when the tables are too small. Yes, we have four people, but sitting two adults and two toddlers who grab everything they can reach at a square 4 seater table, is only asking for forks to be flung on the floor, and little ones to grab hot plates. There is no space to get anything away from them!

ohnonotthatguy: Most of my bitching is blamed on management/owners fault
loud music, improper sitting and poor staff training
Staff should not bring out of kitchen salads or soup after your main course
Female servers should not wear low cut shirts nor tight t-shirts that are squeezing her tits onto the dinner table nor should they wear mini skirts that almost their @$%%&*&$@ is visible for that i can go to a local bar and have that

Male servers should be clean shaven and well groomed at all times

Staff at least have some knowledge of the daily special and some crap on the menu
Wine list a must

Hyenablood: I usually don't go to resturants, I'm more the fast food/food court person. If I do go into a place to sit down and have a meal, then I hate a place being so slow that you have to stand in line for more than a half an hour.

Miss_Chrys: I was talking to friends the other night who all work in Hospitality (myself included) and some of the stories that come out from their perspective about what they hate that guests doing is just as interesting.. I think I'm going to have to start putting all those stories together. Similar to Kitchen Nightmares or something.. The general consensus was that the worst thing is being seated in an already busy restuarant/bar etc and not getting the full attention you need. We'd rather wait in the bar and have a drink before being brought through to a dining room than having to wait for servers to take drink orders, then take meal orders, then meals taking forever to come out.

The biggest gripe for me is that staff members DONT take food allergies seriously. In 2 years now I've had to go to hospital because people DIDNT check before telling me something had what I was allergic too.. grrrr...
