Depression (Page 4)

Nicotina2
Nicotina2: @ unforgiven_soul You are representative of the ignorance that even those in the medical profession are sometimes plagued by.

"The most important thing with depression is how weak or strong character you are and how much you want to help yourself."

Are you kidding me? Seriously, if it were simply a matter of character as to if a person suffers from depression then I for one would not be suffering from this disease. You have no idea of the lengths that people have gone to in order to become healthy. There is NO TEST to determine the levels of brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, etc.
There is evidence to support a genetic factor, this is subject to the question of nature vs nurture.

You did get it right about depression varying from person to person.
For the sake of the patients of the psychiatrist-neurologist you worked for and any other person who suffers any type of brain disease, I hope you will or better yet, have changed careers.

Edit - spelling.

Azimuth_Predator: Ok i read some of the comments in here and i have also done a small research on this matter plus i have read a few psychology books and i have met some people who have Depression and last, i had i small depression linked to love but i got through it cause simply i did something about it.

As for medical profession i think those people have some better opinions on this subject cause they deal with it every day.

Not saying that they are all effective but there are some with ignorance but not all.
The last thing we want on a debate is a stereotype. People that believe in stereotypes are victims to various things such us Believing, trying harder, trusting some1 and many more.

As for the chemicals and the medicine i don"t trust it either. But I do believe in strong character and will. Cause a few people i know that have depression dont even try hard enough to go through it. It seems that they like being victims and the like to remain in that status. Thats what i think about nicotina thus far.
I am sorry nicotina but i have to disagree with some statements you made earlier on this subject. I agree with some you said though, but not all.

Have you ever tried doing some activity? Do you like sports? Do you like the arts? Do you like Physics? Anything?? There must be something you like i am sure. What about Animals such as dogs? Their are loyal friends and they might help a bit.
Try getting a telescope and during night time just look up and see what wonders the Cosmos has to offer to your imagination.
Learn about the stars and the universe and have some weed during the process lol

My point is that strong will and character can help. So i will have to Agree with unforgiven soul on that one.

Nicotina2: @ Azimuth_Predator "Cause a few people i know that have depression dont even try hard enough to go through it. It seems that they like being victims and the like to remain in that status. Thats what i think about nicotina thus far."

"...dont even try hard enough..." That is the problem with depression, it causes the person who suffers from it to not even care. The not trying is a symptom of the disease.

Azimuth_Predator stated "The last thing we want on a debate is a stereotype. People that believe in stereotypes are victims to various things such us Believing, trying harder, trusting some1 and many more." yet gives a specific example to reinforce the stereotype that those with depression who are not getting better don't try hard enough.

The problem is that depression is a disease not a choice. No one chooses to have depression just as no one chooses to have cancer. I doubt many people would isinuate that a person with cancer is not trying hard enough to get better. It simply isn't the case.

wrt my depression... it is severe depression. I'm not here to discuss my situation. Please do not make the gross assumption that I see myself as a victim and as such do not even try. That is the root of stereotyping... assumptions.

Those with depression are victims in the sense that they are suffering from a disease. Many people who are afflicted with this disease are able to function at a high level, fortunately they were able to find treatment that was affective.

As Joshua Walters says "I embrace my mental skillness.".

Nicotina2: Azimuth_Predator, if you feel such a compelling need to be "right", please be my guest in your many assumptions.
It would behove you to fully read any link you post. Thank you for proving my point re attitude and depression.

From the link that you posted.

What Are the Treatments for Depression?

The stigma depression carries drives many people to hide it, try to tough it out, or self-medicate with alcohol, drugs, or herbal remedies. To effectively treat depression, see a good mental health professional and get a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Many treatments for depression are available. They vary according to the cause of the depression and its severity.
Major depression and dysthymia are usually treated with a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressants. Psychotherapy aims to teach patients how to overcome negative attitudes and feelings and to encourage them to return to normal activities. Drug therapy is intended to moderate or correct chemical imbalances that affect moods.

I suggest you reread the article. At the site you are referring to there is also a "Depression Myths Quiz". It may be of some interest to you.

kat82: So, Nicotina2 you think that I'm ignorant and I have no idea... Well, you 're totally wrong, you don't know a thing about me, so you cannot judge my experience. Do you really think that a comedian knows better than a professional doctor? The doctor I was working for was a wonderful psychiatrist who helped people face serious problems, and thankfully yes I think that people can face and cure depression that's why I was working with him. If you worked with him, what would you tell to patients? You have no cure? Go kill yourself?? You 're sooo negative. You can always face your depression, as long as you try and as long as you don't have a serious problem such as schizo.

Also which person are you referring to when you say "comedian"?

gemmasmith: It amuses me that when someone has a differing opinion or insight into this subject that it is preceived as being negative. No, it is explaining their experiences and knowledge thus far on the subject. Professionals I have come across admit they dont have the answers, why, because there are hundreds of different disorders and a multitude of different people and no professional can say that they understand fully any one person unless they devote a considerable amount of time and effort. This can be achieved maybe, when people can afford treatment by top professionals, unfortunately there aren't enough of them and not enough people that can afford it. There are more people still hiding than are seeking treatment. Why, because, opening a can of worms may be more detrimental than helpful and they fear this, plus they have been made to feeel that they have two heads. In my experience, professionals resort to drug therapy and haphazardly offer therapy. They also have the opinion that doctors have that they are not to be argued with and are never wrong.
Just because you worked for a professional doesn't mean you or they have the answers to individual people out there or .anyone posting a reply. I didn't see any negativity in Nico's posts only an opinion and in no way would she resort to the words you suggested.

Nicotina2: @ gemmasmith, thank you for your kind words. I couldn't imagine saying such vile things to another human being.
Your post is most insightful. I agree that there is often a "god complex" amongst professionals in the mental heath services. Many suffer abuse themselves and some become numb to the extreme distress of those who suffer a brain disease.
Some of the people I have worked with over the last 10+ years have shown nothing but kindness, understanding and encouragement. I am thankful for all their efforts and know that without them I would not have made it this far.
So little is know and for some patients it becomes a question of what drug/combination works best and if psychotherapy is advisable. I talk about my experiences because I am tired of the stigma associated with brain disease. I do this not only for myself but for those who are afraid, in need of help, those who are in treatment an must battle everyday, for those who are ashamed, for those who can not speak for themselves and for the incredibly brave people who spoke out before me. With out others being willing to discuss their experiences I fear that brain disease treatment would have come so far. Not long ago forced medical procedures and drug therapy was commonplace. It still does exist albeit a small number of patients however one it too many.
There are nightmarish recounts of what some have been through in the name of treatment. Some of this I have seen 1st hand. Including name calling, emotional blackmail, incorrect use of medication and with-holding vital medication. There are also recounts of triumph over adversity, where the patient and their treatment providers work together resulting in total remission for some and a vast improvement for others.
There is no cure for depression that will work for all people. Some will suffer from bouts of severe depression their entire life. We ought never dismiss these people as they have shown immeasurable strength to have made it alive so far and simply because they are fellow human beings.
There is hope, sometimes it is difficult if not impossible to see. Such is the nature of the disease. Through education and patient advocacy better treatment will be discovered.

gemmasmith: Well said Nicotina and with great insight which is a blessing for you and I because we can help those those that lose insight into their illness. I can never turn my back on someone and I believe people that have walked the walk are best able to talk the talk, far better than many professionals. It is with disgust that when you do offer some insight to them they poo poo it, they are trained and what would anyone suffering or had suffered a mental disorder know. Take care

just recently i met someone who has no idea what to do to help me but what he does keeps me from getting to deep into my own head. He does not judge he only distracts me and give me positive to think about until i see him again. I am blessed to have these outlets. I have stayed in the bed for weeks at a time and not eaten for days.

Here's a link to anyone who suffers from depression. Neuro-scientists are getting closer to figuring out the cause of depression and depressive symptoms. And it is known that depression is linked to a decrease in the production of certain neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Exercising and and healthy eating can help in the production of these. It's the little things that make a huge difference. I hope this helped.
