Corwin:
When I clean a fish, the first thing I do is swiftly remove the head... give the poor fishy a quick end. When I was a child, my father used to tell me that fish don't have any nervous system and can't feel a thing... but I know enough about biology to know that isn't the case.

Nicorrette: dear, how can u move swiftly a heads fish?this is not an animal with head like farm or wood animals, this is an animal that has a form typical as a fish,a vertebrate an du can not remove gently his head.they do have a nervous system, the blood is red, afterall.I remember from fishing as child we kept the fish capture in small areas of waters untill they could not breath.sad but this is how u get a fish to die.

Corwin: Suffocation is one of the most horrible ways to die.

A proper sharp filet-knife is sharp beyond sharp... sharp as a surgeon's scalpel... it cuts through flesh and bone with equal swiftness. Place the filet-knife just behind the skull, picture a line just behind the gills, and in one swift stroke the head comes away.... just watch your fingers when using a knife like this.

Nicorrette: I see,its a savage way to eat a fish because its a damn capture to have a fish catched,I kinda remember discovery in this way u described it.I don't know,..I can tell that even in supermarkets big fish that didn't died they are left to swim in small vacuum tainers and probably after beeing almost dead they cut the fish.

Corwin: You've brought up an interesting point, Nico.
Think about it... do you know what the word "humane" means?

What would you prefer if it was you?... the guillotine, or slowly suffocating in a vacuum container? Which is more "savage"? A swift end, or a slow torturous death?

Throughout history, there have been many ways we have performed executions... the swift kind, and the torturous kind. ---

Column A - The swift kind:
Guillotine
Hangman's Gallows (done properly, a swift snap of the neck)
Firing Squad
Electric Chair
Gas Chamber
Lethal Injection

Column B - The torturous kind
Burned at the stake
Boiled alive in hot oil
Drawn and quartered (being pulled limb from limb by horses tied to each limb)
Crucifixion
Buried alive (death by suffocation, like you suggest)
Thrown to a pack of lions, pigs, or wild dogs

If you had to choose... would you choose Column A, or Column B?

When a human hunter kills it does so "humanely", the animal is spared a more grizzly death it would suffer in the wild... wild animals typically don't die of old age... most are eaten alive.

If you were a deer for instance... would you prefer to be eaten alive by a pack of wolves?... or to hear a thunderclap out of nowhere, feel a sting like a bee, get sleepy, and lay down and go to sleep for the last time?

Makes you think, don't it?

Corwin: Good point Har... with the Guillotine, there would still be the "horror" of death... I'm not sure it would last 5 minutes or not... but you would certainly be aware for a short time after the head was severed.

I remember reading a Time magazine article about this some years back, and I gave the idea some thought....
..... for me personally, I'd go with the firing-squad. You get to die on your feet, and they give you a smoke right before.
And apparently it's not that painful... you feel like you're getting slapped or punched, and you die in a state of physical shock before the actual pain sets in.
-----------
Interesting how a topic about pest-control can turn towards execution... but there is a certain relevance... afterall, we are, in a manner of speaking, executing the pest rodents in question here.

This is why I am am against the use of sticky paper... I had a friend who used it, and sometimes those little guys were chewing their own limbs off trying to escape... horrible.
Even though they are pests and need to be dealt with, they are still intelligent mammals not so different than us, and deserve a swift death I think.

Aura
Aura: funny how most humans are not humane in the least, but that's an other discussion all together.
I still prefer cats as pest control, true that they don't hunt their prey to extinction but it's a very stupid prey that chooses to live in the predator's territory. Glue is just mean and poison isn't instant so they will die in their holes (inside your walls) and stink the place up.

Corwin: True enough.

Although the cat isn't exactly humane either.
A cat will kill a rat quick enough, as the rat is a big nasty thing that fights back. But the poor mice get tormented for ages before the cat gets bored and finishes them off.
Don't they know it's impolite to play with their food?

harlett anathema: any way... a peppermint oil soaked cotton ball will keep mice out of your cabinets and out of where else you chase them out of with..so you have too trap them..in some way... bonus is your house smells divine...

Aura: Lol, it might be impolite to us, but it makes for yummy food for the cat. All that adrenalin going through the mouse tenderizes the meat. We worked around it with herbs and spices, all a cat can do is 'torture'.

you'd to get watch someone be hung and revived

then they open up you belly and attached your intestines too a rack they slowly took out, with you laying in such a way you got watch .. mean while they have a bbq grill sitting right besides your face where they cook some of your other organs right before eyes.. and you lived through it all until they attached your four limbs too a horse and pulled you apart...

We had a cat that used to bring home rabbits as big as she was... and she'd have a few wounds sometimes to show for it... the rabbit has claws on it's powerful hind legs, and tries to fight back. She was quite a hunter, that one. Lived to a ripe age too, and we never had to feed her.

Hyenablood
Hyenablood: not to get too off topic, but lately small sparrow-size birds and chickadees have been making a beeline for our garage which is open nearly all day. When one of us leaves, the birds just stay in there, no flying away. When we close the screechy doors, they sit all passivly in the rafters.
They are so 'tame' that when I get home, I drive in, shut it off, open and close my car door. Walk to the open door, start closing it, and THEN they panic and fly out, after all that.
We have mixed feeling, on one hand, it's cold out, poor little things, on the other, the little bastards are shitting all over mom's van ( not my yellow car yet thank god )
Somedays the birds are in the garage with the doors closed for hours, we give them a chance to vam-oose, but they refuse, rather staying trapped inside than being outside, cold, free and with food.
