Marvin at work: Hi PureSilver, if you travel from Germany to the other end of the world, three people, you need some luggage. For me there was no space for tent and sleeping bag.
I went to the South and North Islands and you are right it is lovely.

Comrade_: Yes, I camp on a special beach, takes approx. 6 miles to hike to but there is a river, fresh water spring and a waterfall about a further 2mile inland. ah it's heaven not much people go and when it's night it's pitch black with only the light from the moon and some stars or a camp fire...just the sea breeze and the sounds of the waves. That's my spot when I grab my bike and go there to relax.

PureSilver67: @ Hal ... thanks. and yes, I can understand that.

I lived in Dresden for 2 years (mid 1995- mid 1997). My partner (at the time) and I travelled to the Mazuran Lake area of Poland and camped and canoed .. that was beautiful.

Outbackjack: I love camping!

I go all the time with the kids. They are quite used to it as they have done it from a very young age.We just have one tent,a gas stove/light and sleeping bags. When I camp alone I usually sleep outside in my swag and leave the tent at home.I like to get off the main tourist trails and retreat into the forests, rivers and remote beaches and lets face it there are plenty of places in W.A.

It surprises me how many foreign and interstate tourists I encounter on the road and how few Western Australians are out there seeing their beautiful state. There are usually that few people out there camping that you can continually bump into someone you camped with or saw a few weeks ago and you can be both 500kms down the road.

There also seems to be a bit of a community thing where you look out for each other or warn each other of perils at other sites or whether places are crowded or closed.Or where the rangers are active lol.

I have my secret spots that I never divulge to anyone.I get the best beaches and riverbanks in the world all to ourselves. The catch is that the ranger can be lurking around and you sometimes have to move very fast to escape them. You need to travel light and be ready to move quick fast.Covering up your numberplate the night before and literally bashing your way through the bush to escape keeps them at bay.To this day I have not been caught. It is well worth the effort as I visit places that people will never see and experience nature in such a unique way.

I like to go north towards the tropics in Spring and Summer when possible and head to our beautiful south west in Summer and Autumn.

Apart from not having campfires at certain times of the year there is only one rule.Try to leave the place as tidy as you found it.

PureSilver67: @ Outback ... those special places in WA must be gorgeous ... I can imagine some and then must imagine even more special. Even on our trip across Australia, the girls and I bumped into some people a few times. My girls even took one couples' dogs for a walk around the park we stayed in The camping spot at Longreach (next to the Thompson River) is just like a little town ... so many campervans and not many tents. Less and less seem to be "tenting" and taking at least a trailer with fold out camper.

Sounds a bit tricky with the ranger ... hope you're joking about that. There are camping spots created for a reason ... mostly to keep the impact down. It is great though that you "leave the place as you found it" ... for us a constant disappointment on the trip, especially on the bushwalks was the rubbish/ toilet paper along the side of trails ... disgusting and sad.

Outback have you ever camped up at Karinjini NP? I've heard it's beautiful and was one place I had wanted to go, but we didn't get there.

Outbackjack: Yes there are few of us campers buts that cool as the Mod Con campers cant drag their caravans and trailers off the roads like we do with our tents.

I am not joking about the rangers lol. They have been consistently shutting down campsites here in W.A.Local business infest the councils and the council shuts the sites down to force people into the caravan parks in the towns(so they spend money).I dont go camping so I end up in towns camped on top of each other and have noisy drunks tripping over my tent ropes all through the night.

If there arent enough designated camp spots then you can be sure I will find my own regardless of what the local Capitalists/rangers say.

I havent been to Karinjini NP to camp but have been near the area.I usually only get up that way in the spring school holidays but not every year.

PureSilver67: @ Outback ... too bad about the diminishing camping spots/ campsites. I work in the Dept of Environment (Qld) and it's not the Ranger's fault - Environment is at the BOTTOM of the list when it comes to funding etc. ... they would be doing part of their job ... it's those above and like you said, the industry (travel) influencing such things that contributes to the reduction.

The Rangers do a great job of protecting areas they really love (most Rangers are very dedicated to the environment) with very little support (financial or otherwise). It's the system not the people on the ground.

Like I said before, at least you leave the area virtually the same

Outbackjack: I live in Western Australia Southern Rose.

I agree its not the rangers fault about the closure of camp sites. We have a mob called D.E.C here.Department of Environment and Conservation. The whole title is an oxymoron really as they dont like you illegally camping but they are quite prepared to let the foresters and miners into our national parks and nature reserves.Through D.E.C and the forest products commission in the last few years alone our state government has lost $120 million subsidizing private industry to come into our beautiful forests and clearfell them.Anything that is left is taken to a smelter at Kemerton near Bunbury to be burned by the Japanese company Simcoa to make silica/silicon!

Its insane.

I have personally witnessed on a number of occasions Rangers moving around Dieback free areas just after it has rained! This spreads dieback and I have never seen a ranger washing their shoes or car wheels when travelling between infected and uniinfected areas. There is a culture of apathy and laziness amongst D.E.C.

They need a good kick up the arse.

PureSilver67: all unfortunately true, Outback and sad. Sad when the apathy and laziness is amongst those who are supposed to be protecting the assets of this beautiful country.

Fortunately not long ago (last 5 years) Queensland has had some State Forests come across to National Park status - but it's really only because the forestry department didn't want them and didn't have much money and NP hasn't been given more $$ to manage them either. DERM - Dept of Environment and Resource Management is a combination of previous Qld Parks & Wildlife Service, Environmental Protection Agency (name is fallacy - little protection) and Natural Resources and Water ... we give permits the tick and flick ... development gets ahead, we are continually chasing our tails and instead of preventing environmental damage, we go after them AFTER it has happened!!

lol Southern Rose, I see Outback Jack narrowed it down for you some ... @ OJ

Good on 'em .... that's not my area of work (thus different focus) we're mostly aware that the new mining section of DERM is taking $$ from our area ... as is a new Waste section and new Water section !!! Move the $$ to the latest politically sensitive issue lol ... going to now go read more about the "Lock the Gate Coalition!!" thanks OutbackJ ... always interesting ..
