Love..CAMPING!! (Page 5) Wild__: I haven't done any extreme camping since my daughter was born, but she is now nine years old and about ready to join me. Motels are handy when you want to bring a 2 or 3 year old to the snow though. I love the Northern California mountains so much I named her Sierra. When camping/hiking in Northern California it is important to note that: A) Bears and mountain lions will run at first sight of you, so remain quiet long enough to get a picture. Naturally a mama bear protecting her cubs is a serious concern! B) Always watch where you are about to step as rattlesnakes are a prevalant around here. They only want to be left alone, yet they hide so well. Watch your step! (Look before you step) C) If you hike upon a marijana field change direction, 180 degrees usually works best! I hear the Australian outback is 1000 times more dangerous. Do share some stories.  PureSilver67: @ wildman69er ..  that's hillarious, I really like advice (c) Oh 1000 times ... NO way... In August-September 2011, I drove a small sedan non-4WD (Nissan Tiida) through outback Queensland, to the Northern Territory, down through the middle to South Australia, across the Nullarbor to Western Australia and back to Qld, via NSW. It was me and my two daughters, 8 weeks and we had a blast. (pics are on my profile .. there should also be a map of the trip I may have to repost it ) Safety-wise, I added a 3" nudge bar to the front of my car because IF I was to hit anything (roo, emu, camel .. ok the camel would win regardless) .. it's best to unfortunately damage the animal and not have the front of my car caved in. Luckily I didn't hit anything except a couple of little birds I added a set of roof racks and a luggage cage on top to carry tent, chairs, clothes, fold up table, camp stove, gas bottle, fuel tank (extra) and toolbox. In the boot were the crates of food, sleeping bags, extra water The girls had a crate between them with "things to do" - crosswords, find-a-word, colouring, some homework, diary, plain paper to make things, books to read and on the odd occassion were allowed to watch a dvd movie on the portable player (in the car - never when we were stopped camping) Outback - hiking - like Ayer's Rock or the Olgas involves good sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen and lots and lots and lots of water - in fact the track at the Olgas has water tanks installed around at different points to fill up bottles. Travel is best in autumn/ winter/ spring - NOT summer. I used to tent camp and the wife could not stand it. I bought a 30' travel trailer with the works and she also hates it. after seeing this forum I am ready to take my boys out as much as I can. I would love to go to the outback and camp! That has to be awsome. PureSilver67: Well I can't take credit for starting it .. but yeh, we've had great discussions ... sorry wifey of jaboelman ... I say "ditch her and go campin' with the boys" ... send her to a "indulgence weekend" so she can be massaged away while you have "man time" lol Don't know where you're from jaboelman ... hint: could do with a little more profile info ... camping anywhere is awesome ... more days in one place (I think) make it nicer to relax and can use the "base camp" to have a good look around. I have to admit, except for the nights in the car, I do like to have a shower nearby or at least a freshwater stream/ lake. The night the girls and I had the fire on the nullarbor was lovely and lots of fun. Ahh who am I kidding .. the whole damn trip was a blast!!  Melanie_60: Camping is the best way to truely get to know someone, your out in the woods far away from anyone or anything else you have to servive and trust with the one your with. there are no pretences its all there in the open. I LOVE CAMPING Wild__: I was just kiddin. The worst thing that ever happened to me while camping was when I came within 20 yards of a bear. Luckily for me the bear was scared too. Melanie_60: two yrs ago in Vermont we had a bear cub about 150 lbs kept comming into our camp made a mess then left did ths everyday we were there. i scared the crap out of us but never hurt anyone PureSilver67: and you all think Australia is dangerous for camping lol ... we don't have any bears, or puma, or buffalo or ... hmmmOH ok .. we have crocodile ... never camp too close to rivers up North and don't swim where there's HUGE signs warning of crocs ..  don't laugh .. people still do!

Bundy Bear is soooo cool .. too bad about the Rum blyuk ... @ wildman .. rolly ... that's what I thought about the scared bear ... you probably had ya gun with ya !  or did little Miss have her bb gun with her (kidding, I know ya wouldn't take out a bear ... but here's a bear  and one for Hal too ) cdnmountainman: I just got back from an overnight camp out in the snow, a 10km snowshoe to a Lake, I was breaking trail for a good portion of it, alot of work in snowshoes with a full load on your back. Got to the Camp, probed the snow til I found the firepit, dug it out, and a nice cozy spot for my bivy, got a little fire goin, ate some dinner, slept under the stars, I don't use a tent, just use a bivy sac and a tarp, but last night I knew it would be clear so didn't bother with the tarp, just got to stare into the starry night, the moon right above me, til I fell alseep. Was a little chilly, about minus 12, but I was cozy warm in my sleeping bag and bivy, filled a water bottle full of boiling water to keep down by my feet, that kept things toasty for a few hours. when it got really cold late in the night/early morning, I just zipped up the whole thing up like a cocoon, not let any body heat escape. It worked well, and I slept quite comfortably. getting out the next morning is the hard part, I tried to stay in my cocoon as long as possible, but the need to pee badly forced me to get up and at em. I just got up, packed and got on the move to get warm, after a couple of km I stopped and had some granola bars for breakfast and headed back to town. The deer were happy I blazed them a nice trail into the forest, there were multiple deer tracks on my previous day's tracks, makes it alot easier for them to get through, it also makes it alot easier for the cougars and wolves... saw a moose on the way out... PureSilver67: You're crazy by my standards cdnmountainman ... but amazing at the same time bloody minus 12 and I guess that's fahrenheit?? Geez .. Yep, too bad we humans have bladders eh .. could stay in a nice warm bed all day, and all night and all day again Glad you got out to enjoy  nativepoet80: I just moved from the north Ga. mtns to Charleston s.c. a couple months ago and i miss my rivers and wilderness so much it pains me at times. It's so noisy here all the time that i can hardly hear myself think. I miss being able to just pack up and disappear to my secret waterfall where i could stay for weeks at a time and never see another living soul. Maybe I'll find myself there again soon...before i lose my mind in this chaos infested siren shrouded city. PureSilver67: Ah nativepoet ..
