Top Ten Mafia Movies Bell214: Where would we be without mafia movies? There’d be no “sleeping with the fishes” references. No “I made him an offer he can’t refuse” references. No work for Joe Pesci … Al Pacino would still be an unknown … Even Marlon Brando wouldn’t be quite the larger–than–life figure he is ... Mafia movies has helped turn actors into icons, and some are great movies … even if they are violent and distasteful at times. It’s not easy to choose the top ten mafia movies, given how many films have been made about the subject. From Coppola’s The Godfather, usually ranked as one of the ten top movies of all time, mafia or not, to movies in recent years which have given us the good, bad and ugly of organized crime, filmmakers and fans are infatuated with mafia (or the mob). Well, however, this is my list. Please discuss, debate or despise this list … or just make your own. 10. Scarface (1932) 9. Once Upon A Time In America (1984) 8. Bugsy (1991) 7. Donnie Brasco (1997) 6. The Departed (2006) 5. Goodfellas (1990) 4. Scarface (1983) 3. The Untouchables (1987) 2. The Godfather II (1974) Note: They say sequels never measure up, but somehow, this continuing story of the Corleone mafia family pulls it off. I would say that I love Part II even more … because of Robert De Niro’s outstanding performance. 1. The Godfather (1972) Note: All right, this is the best of the mafia films, the gold standard of mafia movies. Great casting, direction (Francis Ford Coppola), scary and riveting story, relatable themes, and some of the most quoted lines in movie history. Based on the book by Mario Puzo (1969). Not only it is the best mafia movie of all time, it’s one of the best movies out of ALL genres. Period. joskirin: The Departed is not much of mafia, more kinda spy movie... ermm...i think Road to Perdition should be in the top 10.. Bell214: The Departed ... Genre: Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller ... it fits into category "the organized crime movie genre" Jos. It is not a spy movie. joskirin: well, i still think The Departed is a spy/rat movie.. DeCaprio became a rat for the police, and Matt Damon became a rat for the mafias. Lots of actions, but about mafia stuff, going up the hierarchy and stuff...not much. soloturtle: It's a good list Bell. I have no disagreement, but a number 11 should be included to note "Miller's Crossing" by the Cohn Brothers. Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, Marcia Gay Hardin and John Turturo; an excellent movie full of twists and turns. Bell214: Thank you Solo. KidBlaze98: personally I'm not really into the gangster movie scene whatsoever (mafia , street turf war, etc.) but I really love the dialog in the first two godfather movies. I don't know why I never liked Scarface but it's not because it's bad film, it probably just isn't my appeal in movies. Oh well, nice list | Movies Chat Room Similar Conversations |
