StuckInTheSixties: I gotta agree with david. "Saving Private Ryan" is as good as they get. Something very gratifying for me was that after seeing that movie, I told my dad about it. Him and my mom hadn't been in a movie theatre for twenty, maybe thirty years, but my enthusiasm infected him, and I wound up taking my folks to the movies. In between when he saw that movie, and when he died, by father began opening up about his own (US Navy) experiences with that war.

Horrible as war is, it makes a great setting for good stories.

Malobear: I agree with you KWeb. I had a older brother that served.

The actor that played the drill sargent in real life was a drill sargent.
My brother said this was the closest thing to the real thing in the Vietnam era.

dobravery: If 'The Great War' in your post refers to WWI, then I'd say the first adaptation of 'All Quiet on the Western Front.' Otherwise I'll go with 'The Boat.' Though it is kind of on par with Ryan.
