Best rock band is... (Page 10)

davesdatahut: Many good choices noted here, but for my money, it's the good ole Grateful Dead. Who was ever better live? The Allmans were close. But the Dead is in a place by themselves.
Just a couple of snippets...

robwynter: Yep, a bunch of guys all messed up on drugs are WAY better than a rehearsed show that actually has some direction.

I mean, I like the Dead, Allmans, even some Phish, but let's be real. The show was good, the band was good, but they don't hold a candle to some of the others mentioned. They always sounded like (and looked and smelled) they'd just rolled out of a ditch, into a van, back into a ditch, then on to a stage.

Great band. Best? Rock? Nope.

davesdatahut: You are judging the band on how they dressed? And at what point in your life did you go up and smell them?
As for the drugs, they and a lot of other bands did a whole lot of drugs. But ok. So what? They were a highly rehearsed band (where did you get your view that they didn't rehearse?) that was as tight as tight can be, on most nights, which is saying something, given that they never played a song exactly the same from one show to the next. (the two links i posted up are fairly good examples)
It is worth noting that a lot of their music was free-form jamming, similar to how a lot of jazz is unstructured. It may not have sounded rehearsed. But there ain't no two-bit, wasted musicians who can do the kind of jamming they did.
I am guessing, based on your age, that you never actually saw them live, much less smelled them.

DIP KHAN: Guns N Roses is the best band ever no doubt about it......wat a cool combo they had AXL N SLASH............both r the best. one got the most seductive and pure rock voice and other is guitar god. about their dress n style wow....I jus can say....my god. totally ROCK DRUG

CryingLightning: I like a lot of bands but my favorites are placebo, the beatles, abba, garbage, nbt, the strokes, etc etc

firesciguy14: And the only band who can say they have the most gold record (albums and singles) is KISS.

Threadbare: in my opinion, i think nirvana is the best rock band. Especially their nevermind album.
