Did they forever change music? Hendrix was one of the few true musical geniuses you can find, there will noone like him ever. Probably the greatest sense of sounds ever... anarchitect77: No mention of the Keef?! No mention of Hetfield?! No mention of Townshend?! No mention of Vai?! Hardly a word about Iommi or Blackmore. What some of the guys like Billy Gibbons?  ricktune: You're all just listing a who's who of guitar players. Most of them, I agree, are excellent in their own rights, but they didn't invent rock or do any more than help it evolve. You should listen to Les Paul (the man, not the guitar), Gibson gave him total say over the greatest guitar that the company ever produced. Not because he was a great designer, but because he was a great musician. I'd like to see some of todays rockers come off with original licks and solos like Les Paul did. I also didn't see Robert Johnson anywhere in the list of "great" guitar players. If you listen to Page, Clapton, Beck (also not listed anywhere), BB King, Bo Didley (also not listed) then you are listening to Robert Johnson. Johnson was as much the father of blues as Elvis was the king of rockabilly and Ray Charles is the Father of Soul. I saw Hendrix mentioned many, many times and he was a great guitarist. He is my personal Hero, but imagine where music would have been if he had lived. Would Eddie have ripped on Hot For Teacher or would he have been reproducing something Hendrix had already done? We'll never know, we lost too many greats to violence and drugs, but don't ever forget the roots, that's where the greatest guitar players live(d). irish84: Most of those names are not forgotten, it's just that in today's society, people don't know how far back the roots really go. The only reason i can think of as to why they aren't recognized as the real guitar heroes is because all the recognition is now being given to those who took it from there. ricktune: Exactly, that's my point. I go to my local haunts and I see these bands, young and old, covering everything from Hendrix and The Who to Nickleback and Nine Inch Nails. What they don't realise, or understand for that matter, is that these bands are cover bands for what came before them. The Beatles reached popularity in England and Germany by covering American blues greats like Bo Didley and Chuck Berry. In turn those blues greats became famous covering even older blues greats like Willy Brown, John Lee H&%zwz, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. If you take any song written today you can dice it, slice it and find the Blues heart beating in it somewhere. I'm not a big blues fanatic, I can take it to a point, but this thread isn't about blues, it's about the greatest guitar players. I don't think anyone currently rocking is or will ever approach greatness on the guitar for the simple fact that no one shoots for the stars anymore on the guitar. there are no more "guitar heroes". Guitar is no more than a back up instrument anymore, not unlike synths in the 80's and 90's. It pains me to make these statements, but when you've seen some of the greatest riff masters, IE; Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Duane Allman, Randy Rhoads, Carlos Santana (And I did see these guys live) then everything that I've seen recently (in the past 15 or so years) has fallen way short. Until we get somebody new, that has something new to offer and he or she can shred it without any backup music whatsoever (Eruption) then we are doomed to an eternity in the realm of blah and bland. I wish I could come up with a current, top 10, guitar hero, I just don't see one existing. My personal favorites....T-Bone walker, Les Paul, Jeff Beck, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Bo Didley, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Angus Young and there are a few more, but these represent the spread of my listening enjoyment. Doodsy: Couldn't agree more. I'm amazed at the blandness of modern guitar playing. I can't remember the last time I heard a modern rock tune with an actual solo that was anything worthwhile. I've given up listening to modern rock and modern popular music in general. I look at what makes up the Top 40 these days and it's laughable. No-one is gonna remember any of these songs or artists in 10 years time, let alone 40 or 50 years time. It's 95% rubbish.
