Murdoch slams Scientology as 'evil and creepy' (Page 4)

Coffrey
Coffrey: Ummm, that was a separate idea, meaning that scientology is worse than christianity, not that it's necessarily a scam.. I can point to instances of scam in christianity, namely televangelists and faith healers. But from the ground up, scientology IS a scam, whereas christanity is at least somewhat legitimate.

Barbara the Jew: yes you are correct that some people in Christianity abuse the confadence of their followers but i see that in islam as well. That doesnt mean that faith of both this religions is a scam. Freedom of religion. This is coming from a jew. on a side note i think scientology is insane but not necesarly a scam.

Coffrey: Okay for the record, the entire religions of Islam and Christianity are not scams. But Scientology IS and if you want the proof, read the link I posted. Hubbard was a science fiction writer who wrote before founding scientology, that it was the easiest way to get rich was to start a religion. And the only way to know more about the religion you supposedly believe in, you have to pay for the privilege. How is that not a scam? Compare to Christianity, it would be like if you read the genesis story, you had to pay $100 to get the flood story, and then probably $1,000 to even get to the Jesus part. does that make any sense?

Coffrey: They still destroy people's lives, especially children. The recent hubbub with Cruise and Holmes was because Cruise was going to put their kid in the religion. You know when your religion is so terrible that it actually causes a divorce 5 years after the fact.
What they do to anyone who leaves the church is harass them, get them fired from their jobs, and of course, like the Mormons, they won't allow any current members to associate with ex-members, which is one thing I give Christianity a credit for is not giving a shit about ex-members.

lavendar_star: I agree with you Coffrey about Scientology and in Europe it is not consider a religion especially due to their dubious tax dodging antics etc but a cult and your criticisms of them is valid. They have this thing called the higher order called Sea organisation in California. Where 16 years olds and above go and are paid £32 per week and do various things like cleaning, recruiting and fund raising. According to former members they were forced to do menial labour for up to 20 hours and if they left they track them down and made them return and tough punishment as well. Its a combination of military and corporation, According to gossip Katie Holmes was afraid of her child being sent to this and I do find it strange that she has got sole custody so I imagine she has some serious dirty on Tom and Scientology.

I also argee with Cas that its a new thing so people are understandably weary of it, when the Abraham religions first came out people were suspicious of them but the Scientology lot dont help themselves by being so insular and secretive which makes people more suspicious. Also people have freedom of religion but that still has limitation as you can make anything a religious requirement but it might be illegal or immoral so therefore wrong. One cult/supposed religion was the children of God promoted and they engaged in pedophilia which they claim was a part of their religion and certain sects of mormon still have many wives which is against the law so religious freedom can only go so far.

Metaverseguy: I don't get why a religion is worse for children than adults. If something is harmful for a child then isn't it also harmful for an adult? What's the difference?

lavendar_star: Well I'm guess for Katie she felt that her child would be sucked into the cult, your obviously more impressionable as a child then you are as a adult.

If you tell a child that Santa is real then they believe you and the story that if their good and bad they will get this and that and are more unlikely to question you or at least accept any answers you give them. However, if you tell that to a adult most wont believe you and would question you and unless they are vulnerable and naive.

That's the difference as the they say in marketing for consumer goods if you get children young they your more likely to get brand loyalty for longer which why they spend a lot on advertising on kids, good old psychology. I also think what I have seen on cults etc that its a way of life for children they dont know any better whilst adults do, but I get your point, I guess adults have a choice most of the time compared to being born into something where your kind of conditioning into it.

Coffrey: There's no line when it comes to children, but I almost forgot that they were tried in some European country for fraud, France I think it is. And you forgot the mention that, at Sea Org, they sign a billion year contract.... fucking looney tunes.
One thing I'll say that ties scientology to christianity is in the beginning, the common people weren't allowed to read the bible, only the priests and order were allowed to read it and then interpret it to the masses.

lavendar_star: It looks like Scientology is taking leaf from the Christians in using their media to spread their message, clever business and PR move, I bet it will be funny and interesting to watch their TV shows especially after the movie disaster that was that Scientology inspired movie by John Travolta.

The Church of Scientology has bought a Hollywood television studio, enabling it to promote its teachings to millions of people via television, radio and the internet.
The church, which counts actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta as members, has spent \$42m (£27m) on a broadcasting centre covering almost five acres.
It marks a move away from the use of more traditional media to boost its public profile - in the past the organisation has relied mostly on pamphlets and books by its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, to recruit new members.

"The church plans to establish a central media hub for our growing world network of churches and to move into the production of religious television and radio broadcasting," church spokeswoman, Karin Pouw, said.
It is not known when production will begin at the studio, which is located on the iconic LA street Sunset Boulevard, close to the organisation's 'Celebrity Centre International' in Hollywood. Professor of American studies at the University of Buffalo, Elayne Rapping, said she was not surprised by the church's move.
"Having their own TV is a good idea since they can spin things their way," she said.
"They are after good PR which they can control to offset the bad publicity surrounding them in other media."
The organisation has been accused of being a cult by former participants, and some have claimed it abuses its members by separating children and parents, among other things - although it denies such allegations.

As such, broadcasting from the new centre could promote the church in a more positive light – with the possibility that some of its celebrity members appear in productions. The Hollywood studio will complement the church's existing facility - Golden Era Productions - in California, which produces DVDs and "other audio-visual materials that comprise a large part of the church's religious and educational materials," Ms Pouw said. The organisation took control of the centre in April, when its former owners, public television station KCET, moved locations.
Religious broadcasting in the US is no new phenomenon - a number of popular organisations already exist including the Christian Broadcasting Network and Trinity Broadcast Network, which produces Christian programmes at a centre in Texas to air on television stations across the US.

I have to say what I have seen of the Christian TV shows ones be them American, South American or African is just amusement and slight bewilderment but hey one could argue the media is a new religion itself with celebrities like Pagan Gods/Goddess. lol
