Interest but controversial topic...

Magz Rides Again
Magz Rides Again: There is a TV program in Australia called The Gruen Transfer. The show focuses on advertising different products and these are discussed by four panelists from advertising agencies and hosted by one of Australia's popular comedians - Wil Anderson.

During each episode, 2 agencies are given the opportunity to pitch an advertising idea. These can be very funny and/or controversial.

This week's topic is no exception...Banning All Religions.

Now this thread could have been placed under a number of different themes which is why I have placed it here.

I do believe in a God, but I am also very aware that religion has been the foundation for the majority of wars in our world.

What I would like to know is what people think of the suggestions put forward by either or both of the ads here and which is your fave or the most successful in getting it's message across?

Zoey234: definitely the second one for emotional persuasiveness..........first one was little too cute although I agree with the premise entirely........ but I do hope that some of the more spiritually powerful concepts can be retained when the carcas is tossed....... religion's been dead for so long now it's stinking up the place and the only people left in churches are either incredibly bland or psycho's. I'm a believer btw but I've never believed in organized religion........ when I stopped going to church is when I had started walking out on sermans's that were so woefully irrelevant they became offensive to me.

Magz Rides Again: I don't have a problem with organised religion - know too many awesome guys who've become priests - a former lawyer, a former architect and a former mathemetician mark just a few.

My issues is when the selfrighteous ( and every faith has them) think they know better than anyone else and wear blinkers everywhere they go. It is such as these that are the instigators of arrogance and hate that perpetuate the belief that they are right and everyone else is wrong.

I just found this particular pitch to be very interesting. The first was lighthearted in its approach to the subject, but the latter made me go "hmmm".

Humm…

Interesting show.

Replace the word ‘religion’ with the word ‘freedom or liberty or self-determination’ or perhaps buildings, cars, alcohol, drugs. Everything has a down side….everything. Drugs keep people alive and healthy yet abuse of drugs is horrific. Would you ban all drugs? Of course not, you ban the drugs that cause misery. There are drugs that everyone agrees are destructive, drugs that are a great influence on the quality of human life, and then there are the drugs that cause physical and mental misery and are considered illegal. And then there are people that debate which drugs are “good and bad”.

Everything has an upside as well.

Magz Rides Again: I agree with you there David. It is about moderation. Extreme behaviour, regardless of the focus, is what can be dangerous.

Magz Rides Again: Hear hear. I was shocked recently when I spoke with a friend that I've know since we were 5yo. She is part of a fundamental church. We were talking about diff thens when she stated that she would no longer buy Cadbury chocolates as Cadbury supported Muslim. She then went on to say why she hated Muslims. Everything that came out of her mouth sounded like brainwashing doctrine.

We both grew up Catholic, and I am pleased to see that the Catholic church in my town are focussed on an ecumenical unity across different faiths. I believe that as we seek common ground rather than focussing on our differences, we can reach that unity. That may be naive of me, but I choose to work towards harmony that way.

David responds:

Magz Rides Again: The Gruen Transfer is one of my fave shows and the pitches are great. Another one they did was why Australia should invade New Zealand. Another why all people over 80 should be euthenised.

If you search The Gruen Transer pitch on Youtube, you'll see some of these. lmao

Magz Rides Again: Stanislov, that is your opinion and I respect your choice to do so. It is only fair you respect other people's decisions too regardless. I KNOW what belief in God has done for me. For one thing, I don't find it necessary to put other people down because of their beliefs.

Magz Rides Again: Truth is subjective. Your truth will always be different from mine and mine from the next person, and so on. As for watching the vid. I have watched enough vids of negative diatribes to last me a lifetime and I am talking about both sides of the fence.

Returning to your statement that one ust always tell the truth..well can you HONESTLY say that you do this? It is impossible for anyone to tell the truth ALL the time (unless he/she is God! )

Stanislov,

I am not one for organized religion because organized religion has its faults…

However, the concept of God represents the good of man, not the bad.

There has been no man who has died, lived or will live that compare or will compare to the concept of God. What’s wrong with believing in the good of man?

Pretty simplistic…but it’s that easy to understand.

Stanislov: So does Santa Claus represent the same.

Bottom line, this is an argument that can't be won.

No matter how much one tries to throw all the proof in the world, people that believe otherwise will never accept it. The white tablecloth will always be black to them.

Saying that, let's nip this in the bud.

Many people on this Earth need a crutch or a support system to get through life and to many, religion is used as said crutch.

Ok....understandable.....for these purposes, whether true or not, if it makes a person happy......if it makes a person good.......if it makes a person have more friends........if it makes a person less depressed................then I am all for it. Not everybody in this world is equally strong. Therefore, for the people not so strong, then by all means, religion may be a good thing for you.....similar to the doctor giving a hypochondriac patient of his/her a placebo.

I have no problems with these people. I do have a problem however with the Jimmy Swaggarts, the Jim Bakkers, Benny Hinns, Oral Roberts, etc. who take advantage of these poor people and swindle them for millions and millions of dollars. These are the people I aim my wrath at. Garbage lowlife scum suckers that they are.

Get it now?

Stan,
.

I agree with you. I'd take it a bit further that those that use 'religion' and what they think is 'the word of God' to commit hidious crimes against humanity.

Those that yell, "God is great!" and then detonate a bomb in a crowded restaurant, bus or whatever are the people I aim my wrath at. Garbage lowlife scum suckers that they were.

Magz Rides Again: Have you noticed though that you are the only agitated person here? You seem so focussed on being right, that you appear to have lost your equilibrium. I honestly don't care whether you believe or not. what I do care is about that those who quietly go about their business are often thrown in with extremists...extreme atheists, agnostics and those that worship a God of some sort.

Unfortunately extreme atheists and certain fundamentalists seem to thrive on attacking one another and getting angry all the time about the other's ignorance and inability to accept that they are wrong.

The rest of us are quite happy to seek out our similarities and through that, enjoy our differences. this is because we give each other the respect we each deserve. You don't see us fighting.
