StuckInTheSixties:

I will be watching it tonight (about 5 1/2 hours from when I type this). I understand that the big pageant has a "surprise" of some sort, and that they are being very hush-hush about it.

So I'll be staying away from this thread until at least tomorrow.

Sarcastic Dots: The rural landscape transforming into an industrialized mess was the highlight. The low point was the randomly unstructured story centralised around social networking, but I suppose it served its purpose--being able to boast about a Brit creating the World Wide Web. Oh yeah, I also liked the NHS segment for obvious reasons.

I'd say, all-in-all, what a truly enjoyed was the inclusiveness of the ceremony. It seemed to demonstrate, to me, the ability to mock ourselves--there was a lot of cynicism in my room, let me tell you--whilst hoping we can pull through the inevitable travesties to put on, at the very least, a self-deprecating show of humour. Gotta love Mr Bean.

You know, not to take anything away from Beijing and several other nations, but I doubt the Chinese could openly insult their own head of state, to the point that they, the head of state, would jovially embrace an entirely fictional universe--in this case, James Bond.

I wouldn't say it was better than Beijing, but I think we all knew that--more importantly, Danny Boyle knew that. This show was good for an entirely different reason; if Beijing was all about spectacle, then London was all about fun.
