Always Tip your Waitress / Waiter !!!! (Page 2) OCD_OCD: I'll have to ask a friend in the restaurant business to refresh my memory, but I think he said that if you buy food at a restaurant "to go", there is no tax, but if you eat it there, there is. I'm not sure why that would be the case, though. Some politician probably thought that little trick up. Snowy_: Yes, I know. Although sometimes if they come to expect it, they may not work as hard to give good service. I have had that happen a few times. Corwin: @ Snowy - I suppose because I rarely go out to eat, I don't chance upon bad service that often... around here the service is usually very good, or at least it is at the few places I frequent. But the food on the other hand... I'm often disappointed. I'm a pretty dang good cook... so they have a hard act to follow. But of course I wouldn't take it out on the tip (not the waitresses fault). lol Snowy_: i find most foods in restaurant chains aren't good and all taste the same. I prefer the private places. Kelseys, Crabby Joes are ones that taste the same. Not fond of them. Corwin: I totally agree Snowy. If I want the same old thing, I'll hit a drive-through. There's a really nice little authentic Irish style pub in Grimsby called The Judge and Jester that is simply amazing. Way better than a franchise. Amazing food, service and atmosphere... it's a bit pricey, but because the portions are enormous, you really get your money's worth too. .... and something I don't make at home... although I've imitated a few of the things I've tried there... like their Yorkie stuffed with Mushrooms and Beef in Guinness sauce.... mmmmmm .... and their lunch sandwiches are as big as your head. (let's see you get that at Denny's ) (Edited by Corwin) Nathaniel Nirvana: Tips are probably less % in the Uk becuz everyone (who hasn't agreed to work on commission only) has minimum wage....so the servers get min & the tips top it up to something more reasonable Whimsical Fairy: Some states have different minimum wages for Servers...for example Florida....the vacation capitol of the world. The Florida minimum wage for tipped employees is $4.65 per hour, higher then the federal minimum wage for tipped employees of $2.13 per hour. The Florida tipped wage applies to employees like waitresses, waiters, bartenders, valets, and other service employees who earn more then $30 in tips a month. Including tips and cash wages, all tipped employees must still earn at least the Florida Minimum Wage of $7.79 per hour. If a Florida employee does not earn at least $7.79 including tips in any given hour of work, their employer must make up the difference in cash. Whimsical Fairy: When I lived in Florida I made $2.35 per hour plus tips. It really sucked when ppl from other countries came to Florida on vacation because in some of there countries the servers make $10-$20 an hour so leaving a $1 tip is considered a bonus. $1 on a $150 tab is an insult...they just didn't know any better. Snowy_: One person I tip extremely well is my hairdresser. You could be walking around with a bad hair cut for quite a while if you didn't. A good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold. xox G xox: Wages are high here in Oz (anything from $20hr upwards more for weekends) and tipping is very rare and practically non existent. However to not tip in a country where it is common place is very rude and insulting. DawnGurl: I show my disapproval of lousy service by leaving a small tip. Otherwise Im rather generous: a good healthy handshake and a winning smile. brainfart: My tipping is usually my laziness to ask for change. So I go around tipping just about everyone I purchase something from. drywitty: I don't know if it was passed, but there was going to be a new law in Chicago where there was a highter tax paid for carry-out and delivery meals. It was meant to be an "eco-friendly" law b/c of the extra containers taking up room in landfills, etc. What I do know for sure is that there is an extra tax on bottled water. Is that throughout the US, or just Illinois? Corwin: My daughter's ex never tipped... and he had an attitude about it. He would say, "I don't get tips at my job, why should they?" I tried to explain about the lesser wage, and how they depend on those tips to pay their bills. He told me I was full of shite, and that to pay somebody less than minimum wage would be illegal..... and of course you can't argue with a University student... they know everything. I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that when he frequents a particular restaurant, he gets lousy service, and boogers in his food. (Post deleted by calybonos ) xox G xox: Looks like the Pig created a glitch his avatar pics are joined together I have to ask though, why do those in the States put up with being paid lower than minimum wage. 15yr old here earn at least $7hr in the fast food industry. fairgojustsaying: There's a big difference in wages in Australia compared to USA. We do have higher wages but pay up to twice the price for groceries, eating out, petrol, rent, electricity and so on. As for tipping it is by choice for such things as Taxis, although the taxi service, here, leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of businesses have tip jars such as pubs to collect for the end of year staff party or for a nominated charity. Service stations have tip jars to help out people if they are short, usually by 5,10 or up to a dollar or to use for end of year do. Bad service here is rewarded by not ever going back and letting them know. davidk14: . Depending on where I eat sort of determines if I tip by % of the total bill or tip according to my own formula of minimum per person. For examples, entering an establishment that has sit down service... If I go in for a coffee and desert and the bill comes to $6.00, 15% = $ .90...My minimum tip is $3.00 per person and maximum is usually $5 per person. If I go in for lunch and the bill comes to $16.00. 15% = $2.40. My minimum tip is $5.00 per person. If I go in for a nice dinner for two and the bill comes to $80.00. 15% = $12...My minimum tip is $20 Do I tip for poor service or poor food? Yes. I have actually tipped at a higher rate since the establishment won't be around long and the server will be out of work shortly. Do I penalize the server for poor service or the cook for poor food ? No. It's not their fault that they suck at their job. It is managements and solely managements fault....not the hourly employee. . ColonelKusanagi: since it's okay for customers to post to reddit and major news outlets when they get insulted by something on a receipt and the server/charger whoever gets fired why is it not okay for the employee to do the same and not get fired? Barnesy_: The only tip I give is for the taxi drivers...... "don't drink and drive cause you will spill it"! | Off Topic Chat Room Similar Conversations |
