It is very encouraging to see that our airport security picked it up. Maybe nobody will be sooooo stupid as to have luggage only consisting of drugs.

Let's hope this will be a warning to others who bring in contraband that our security is improving again and not just free-falling backwards.

Mandela notes defective
2013-07-07 00:04

Johannesburg - An important security feature on the new Mandela banknotes - which were rolled out in November last year - has been found to be defective, according to the Sunday Times.

The security thread, the most visible feature on the notes, which was meant to be embedded in the note, was found to be easily lifting off which could be a "counterfeiter's haven", the Sunday Times reported.

The thread is produced by a German company.

The notes are printed by a South African company, South African Bank Note Company, and a Swedish company.

The Swedish company prints the R20, R50 and R200 notes while the South African company prints the R10 and R100 notes.

The South African Reserve Bank - which wholly owns South African Bank Note Company - admitted to "isolated complaints" about the defective security thread on lower denomination notes, the Sunday Times reported.

Sumatran Tigers Trap Men In Trees for Five Days, Kill One

After men accidentally killed a cub, the adult animals treed them for five days

By Melissa Locker @woolyknickers July 08, 20130

In a recent poll of Americans by Public Policy Polling, 26% of respondents said that they would like to have a tiger as an exotic pet. If the poll happened today, though, that number may drop in light of recent events in Sumatra. Five men were surrounded by tigers and stranded in a tree for five days. The men were rescued Monday from their perch in Gunung Leuser National Park on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island.

The men were forced to take to the trees after they accidentally trapped and killed a tiger cub in the national park located in the northern part of Sumatra last Tuesday. They had entered the park in the hopes of harvesting agarwood, a valuable and rare wood used to make incense. During their trek, the men had laid traps for deer and antelope for food, but a tiger cub was caught and killed instead. The adult tigers responded to the death by attacking the men, forcing them to flee up a tree. One man was killed when his branch broke.

Villagers attempted to rescue the five remaining men, after receiving undoubtedly urgent cell phone calls from them, but turned back for reinforcements after seeing “at least four large Sumatran tigers,” according to the BBC. Dozens of rescuers, including local police, were called in, but the rescue team needed three days to reach the rugged area, according to district police chief Lt. Col. Dicky Sondani speaking to the AP. The group was eventually able to drive the tigers away so that the men could come down. The survivors were transported to the nearest village, a trek that normally takes six hours on foot.

The Leuser National Park is home to most of the planet’s remaining Sumatran tiger population, estimated at 400. Besides Sumatran tigers, Leuser park is home to other protected animals, including elephants, rhinos, leopards and around 5,800 of the remaining 6,600 critically endangered Sumatran orangutans. The site is threatened by commercial logging and clear cutting for palm oil plantations.

Malawian calls president 'stupid'
2013-07-23 11:06

Blantyre - Police in Malawi said on Tuesday they had arrested a 37-year-old man and charged him with violating peace, after he allegedly called President Joyce Banda "stupid".

Japhet Chirwa is believed to have called the head of state "stupid and a failure" after a failed bid to change the name on his passport, police spokesperson Maurice Chapola told AFP.

"He got furious and started talking ill of the president," said Chapola, speaking from the northern city of Mzuzu.

Chirwa has been charged with conduct likely to violate peace, which could carry a fine or a six-month custodial sentence.

He is expected to appear in court later this week.

Pakistan takes 'immoral' condom ad off air
2013-07-23 17:33

Islamabad - Pakistan's media regulator pulled the plug on a condom advert starring one of the country's biggest female stars on Tuesday, calling it "immoral", after public complaints.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) wrote to broadcasters ordering them to take the advert for Josh condoms off air immediately.

The 50-second advertisement stars Pakistani model and actress Mathira, one of the country's most popular stars, as a newlywed bride who makes a neighbouring couple jealous by pampering her husband.

Finally the neighbour asks the rather nerdy-looking husband how he keeps his glamorous wife so sweet and he replies: "Bring Josh into your life."

PEMRA spokesperson Fakhar-ud-Din Mughal said the watchdog's letter pointed out that the advertisement was generally being seen as "indecent, immoral and in sheer disregard to our socio-cultural and religious values".

"Airing of such immoral advertisement on Pakistani channels and that too in the holy month of Ramadan warrants serious action," he said.

Discussing contraception in public is taboo in Pakistan's deeply conservative Muslim society, though some experts warn the population is growing too fast for the country's natural resources to support.

According to the United Nations a third of Pakistanis have no access to birth control and its 180 million population is growing by more than 2% a year.

Around a third of Pakistanis who want birth control have no access to it, according to UN and government statistics.

Josh condoms are marketed in Pakistan by DKT International, a US-based non-profit organisation that works to promote family planning and HIV/Aids prevention in the developing world.

Healers summon ancestors for Mandela
2013-07-24 15:32

Pretoria - A group of Gauteng traditional healers performed a ritual for former president Nelson Mandela on Wednesday, outside the Pretoria hospital where he has been treated for 47 days.

The healers burnt incense in a pot, knelt on the ground, sprinkled tobacco, sang and summoned the Madiba ancestors to heal Mandela.

Khubane Mashele, the chairperson of the traditional healers' interim council in Gauteng, asked the spirits of those who had passed during the struggle to help heal the anti-apartheid icon.

"We summon the great kings and soldiers of the struggle to help us in calling the ancestors of Mandela, and help him heal because we still need him," Mashele said in xiTsonga during the ritual.

Earlier in the day, a group of traditional leaders from the North West arrived at the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital to deliver messages of support and a bucket of flowers.

Kgosi Madoda Zibi, chairperson of the house of North West traditional leaders, said they hoped to convey a message to the Mandela family.

"We have been mandated by the North West traditional leaders to come and express our well-wishes," Zibi said.

"We just want to thank him for his contribution to the liberation of his country."

Zibi and his delegation were told to place the flowers and a card at the wall outside the facility's Celliers Street entrance, where messages of support had been left since Mandela was hospitalised on 8 June with a recurring lung infection.

Dutch man ordered to leave SA after 17 years
2013-07-26 10:06

Cape Town - A Dutch man who has lived in South Africa with his family for 17 years has been ordered by the department of home affairs to leave the country, it was reported on Friday.

Thijs Van Hillegondsberg arrived in the country in 1996 with his wife and then 3-year-old son and live in Strand in the Western Cape, it was reported by community news group GroundUp. He also adopted two black South African children.

Since their arrival here, Van Hillegondsberg and his family have struggled to live and work legally in the country. Van Hillegondsberg, who is Dutch, runs a water purifying business.

This week, the department delivered a signed document titled ‘order to illegal foreigner to depart from the republic’. Van Hillegondsberg was ordered to be out of the country by 04 August 2013.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is now trying to get in touch with Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor to find out why the Dutch man cannot stay in South Africa.

In April last year, Madonsela released a report stating that the home affairs department had failed the family and abused its power.

The public protector recommended that the department change the family’s temporary residency status. She urged the department to issue the family permanent residency in South Africa by way of an exemption application, GroundUp reported.

However, Pandor blocked Van Hillegondsberg’s application. He argues that, by law, he should have been awarded permanent residency in 2001 after he became the legal adoptive parent of the two South African children.

The Western Cape home affairs department could not be reached for comment.

Mugabe calls emergency press conference
2013-07-30 15:21

Johannesburg – President Robert Mugabe has called for an emergency press conference to reassure voters and observers that Wednesday’s voting will be free and fair.

With less than 24 hours to go before polls open, an MDC insider reportedly told eNCA that the press conference was a “desperate move by Mugabe" at last minute electioneering.

Polling stations are due to open at 07:00 on Wednesday and heavy armed riot police have been deployed in potential election flashpoints.

According to Reuters the run-down districts of the capital are hotbeds of support for Tsvangirai and were at the centre of several weeks of post-election violence in 2008, in which 200 people linked to his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were killed.

However, this year both the MDC and Mugabe's Zanu-PF party predict landslide victories.

It is possible neither leading candidate will emerge an outright winner, triggering a 11 September run-off. That is a nightmare scenario for many of Zimbabwe's 13 million people who remember the 2008 violence.

Western election observers have been barred, leaving the task of independent oversight to 500 regional and 7 000 domestic monitors. The final results must be released within five days but may come sooner.

Flying Zuma home eats up rescue budget
2013-07-30 10:12

Durban - The SA Air Force's two helicopter squadrons on the coast have received no funding this year for sea and mountain rescue operations, but have received funding for VIP flights, according to a report.

Beeld reported on Tuesday that 15 Squadron based in Durban received a small amount of flight hours for training, but 300 flight hours for VIP flights. This is apparently used to transport President Jacob Zuma to his Nkandla home over weekends.

As a result, there are no funds budgeted for the helicopters to respond to a disaster along the coast.

Zuma uses his presidential jet to fly to King Shaka International Airport in Durban and then uses two Oryx helicopters to fly 100km from there to Nkandla.

According to Beeld, these helicopter flights are estimated to cost around R36 000/flight

22 Squadron in Cape Town is facing a similar predicament, with most of its budget allotted to VIP flights and a small provision for training time. Pilots are no longer applying their search and rescue skills.

It was reported last week that the air force has no operating budget this year for its 30 Agusta helicopters.

The SA National Defence Force said it would not discuss operational matters in public. Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj told Beeld the air force is responsible for Zuma's transport arrangements and the presidency has no say in this.
