I stopped smoking on June 5th over 3 years ago. Why? The doctor that had put a stint in my heart told me that he would drop me as a patient if I didn't. Why? He said why would he put another stint in a dead man for?

Yep. That did it for me. I had stopped smoking before yet never 'quit' so after deep thought, after smoking for over 50 years, I realized I was a nicotine addict and would always be a nicotine addict and needed to treat the addiction as an addiction so...

I choose to not smoke today or tomorrow.

Its been 3 years and 4 months and not a puff.

I also have lost 105 pounds using the same technique. Its all about choice.

uglycow10: Wow !!!!! I am impressed !
Most smokers seem to have a difficult time quitting the habit, but all of the friends who I know....they did it cold turkey...and they were longtime smokers as well.pan
Kudos to you for losing all that weight as well.

You sound like a man with a plan....and a man who sticks to his
plan...
...a true inspiration.

Hats off to you !

Wild__
Wild__: I quit smoking over four months ago because I grew tired of the persistent cough.

I switched to a brand of cigarettes that claims to have no chemical additives for several months before quitting. Initially a smoke break left me unsatisfied but within a few weeks I noticed longer intervals between cigarettes without any effort. So in other words, I weened myself off of the addictive chemical additives and then quit cigarettes with relative ease.

rambo jambo: Started as social smoker with friends. My daughter said to me "why do you smoke when it gives you cancer?" After hearing that I just stopped. I used nicotine gum for the first week then nothing after that. If you really want to stop you will stop.

I agree with you.
You have to possess the will to want to quit smoking.
It is the same with any drug to which humans can become addicted...you have to want to stop, in order to shake that addiction.

The personal turn off for me was the smell of the smoke in my hair, clothes, car ...and not having been able to draw a deep , clean breath whenever I was in the company of my smoking friends.

It simply made me irritable and made me feel like telling my friends to knock it off (which would have caused a lot of ill feelings)....

uglycow10: The closest that I have come to smoking is to making smoke rings (once).

The other occasion was when my dear, departed husband (as in...divorced) ,asked me to light a cigarette for him.
I was so inept at it, that I put the cigarette between my lips, struck the match....then as they do in the movies, I cupped my hand near to the flame AND LIT IT... smack in the middle.!!!!!
The next words that i heard were a bit abrasive. They sounded like this:

ARE YOU STUPID??????
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING TO MY CIGARETTE????????

And that, I fear, was the extent of my smoking experience....
I just was not cut out, to engage in that particular vice....lol

MY life began again, and I rediscovered Betty, the minute he left.

When I broke the news to my parents, they broke out a bottle of champagne and asked me why it took so long to give him the boot.

I trust that the action of your dear, departed wife has had the same effect on you.

IT IS A TOTAL, LIVING HELL AFTERWARDS,... ONCE YOU SAY, "I DO", TO THE WRONG PERSON!

LoisS: I started when I was young and stupid. Never a pack a day smoker but smoked enough to notice that one day the elevator was broken at my cousins building, his floor is pretty high up and I am in pretty good shape, but I was actually dying. When we got up there I couldn't get any air...not because I was hurting from the walk, but because I couldn't breathe. Nothing fancy, but after that hike lols I decided to quit. smoked a couple a week and then just weaned off after that. Took a couple drags if I was climbing the walls and then just stopped. The first summer was the hardest I tell ya..
30 yr smoker and it will be 3 years this April I quit. to everyone who has tried.

So lets review AclDassassin comments for a moment shall we....

1) He wishes that they would make nicotine to be used in a syringe so he could shoot it directly into his blood stream

2) He knows people who drink so much coffee that the effects of the caffeine are no longer effecting them and that they move onto meth.

3) He is more concerned about ISIS, ebola and pot than heart diseases which is the #1 killer in the United States.

The odds that ISIS is gonna cut off his head is slim. Contracting ebola is even slimmer and using pot has not been directly linked to anything bad.

So....perhaps our friend should take a deep breath and re-evaluate his priorities and keep his heart healthy. Once you damage the heart muscle, it does not heal itself. It stays damaged. Heart cells do not regenerate.

I have three stints. I quit smoking, lost over a hundred pounds and try like hell not to damage any more muscle tissue. Oh, I now walk 3-5 miles a day....

uglycow10: I just heard a news story today that second hand smoke does not cause cancer... And never did.
Apparently the WHO (not the Rock band) has had proof to that effect but it was not politically expedient to release the info....and so it was withheld

What's new!!!
