virginkiss: I think our criminal system, TV, music- everyhting around us now helps create criminal minds, even those lock-up shows or shows like on TruTV Forensic Files and such.

A lot of society today has shaped the minds of both young and older, and has helped cultivate a ruined world where crime is priased, justice systems are not only frowned upon but are corrupt within themselves, and it gives everyone the knowledge on how to have a criminal mind.

1calmstorm: In prison, I've heard, people's lives are threatened if they don't join a gang and they have to perform terrible acts on others or they will be hurt themselves.

I'm concerned about where it all begins in the Juvenile Justice System. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Icy_Uranus: Since these people are already in prison, they are already criminals. This means prison is not creating more but instead creating career criminals, harder criminals and sometimes smarter criminals.

Jimeeze: I was once jailed for six months for smoking pot...I am a little guy and was surrounded by rapist, killers and crazed monsters....the only way to survive in there without being molested was to fight....luckily I had 4 years of martial arts training...the average guy my size was bought and sold the minute they hit the yard...only after putting several people in the hopital was I aloud to sleep at night...

Icy_Uranus: Jailing someone for marijuana offences is bullshit, in my opinion.

"Crimes" such as these aren't worthy of prison sentences. People guilty of these crimes aren't criminals, in my mind.

Though they are deemed "criminals" by law there are some people who are convicted of offences which are not really crimes in the true sense of the word. Some get jailed for over bullshit like weed and even some jailed even though they are not guilty.

Looking back on my earlier statement, in these cases, this can be the start of a criminal career. So I suppose it can create criminals.

Entropy
Entropy: Xander, great comment. The role of prison is certainly questionable, and since we have yet to make our minds up about what role we want it to play, I think it works to our detriment rather than our benefit (on several levels).

We want prison to be a deterant of criminal activity. Does it really deter crime? Obviously not enough. When someone does commit a crime, we throw them in prison for X amount of time, and then release them back into society with a sigma that will follow them the rest of their lives. If you permanently brand a criminal as a criminal, it is very unlikely for them to behave as a normal, law abiding citizen (because no one treats them that way).

As a form of punishment or as a deterant of crime, the prison system obviously does not work. We should either work to reform, or remove certain individuals from soceity permanently (people like Jeffrey Dohmer, etc) for their safety.

As for the actual question, does the prison system create criminals? No, though it certainly helps them network together.

summerrain: i agree that society creates criminals. If someone doesn't live up to the values that the society as a whole believes in at the time they punish them whether their laws or belief are justified is majority rules. the fact that we put our fellow man in cages to learn a lesson as we would treat a common house pet is wrong. rehabilitation is key. while they are sitting in their cages we never actually take the time to teach them a better way so they will not make the same mistake. and then we throw them into the same environment or worse in which they came in the first place only to repeat the crime all over again
makes no sense to me

Yahweh
Yahweh: There is very little rehabilitation in prison ,and no help assimilating the excon into society as a productive member ,I have seen many go to prison for driving infractions and still have no relief ,nor way to drive when they are released ,society knows this and tags them as repeat offenders ,they get $1500 a day for every body they have in prison [they don't spend it on the prisoners] does Prison create criminal ? YES

Jimeeze : Yes you can get your record expunged ,there is a process to it ,if you go it alone and do it yourself ,I recommend the book

hitsugaya252: Agree wid vk.
True criminals r not invented from prison system. Whereas deserted ones r from prison, politics, poverty,tv, media...
Now being more focused in your topic. So far i heard they treat very harshly to the prisoners(which includes innocents too). No place for describing. Medias should provide access to how polices dealt with criminals. So that world will be a better place to live in.

sugarshorts: How many of you have ever been to prison? I'v been 4 times and I'v been off parole for 11 yrs Feb 19 2010 you judge all convicts as a whole instead of individuals. every convict has differant surcimstances behind why they are there. Me I was there for being a drug addict, I became an addict because I didnt know how to handle all the sexual, mental and physical abuse from my dad, brother and mother put me through from the age of 6 to 13 whene my mom through me out into the world. I had to do what I had to do to survive. I am an exconvict so does that make me a bad person? Do you think I belonged in prison? I have never stole or physically hurt anyone because of my habit, I'm an extremley honest person with strong morals and standards. I believe in god and try to live life right, I would never intenttionaly harm another person. it's not the prisons that make criminals it's people who make them by treating each other badly. I dont blame my addiction on my family I knew right from from wrong but they didnt help. Prison is what you as a prisoner make it. You dont have to join a gang unless thats what you want and prison is nothing like you see on t.v they dont rape and beat you and as far as learning new crimes thats on the person you don't have to listen. Your right about life being harder for you whene you get out, its hard to find employment w/ a felony on your record but if you truely wanna change and be a productive member of society you keep tryin. If you want to seal your record you can its expunging your record its easy but costly 500$ I did it. What I got out of prison was was a chance I graduated high school there and started college there. I learned a trade electrical bonding I make 16 dollars an hour now. Heres the the crazy twist my birth father is a very famouse criminal on death row my birth mother was a manson family member. So even though I'm an addict and an exconvict I'm still a good careing productive member of society. Prisons are for punishing but if the prisoner wants it bad enough they can be reabilitated

Yahweh
Yahweh: I personally help those incarcerated for free in my area ,I'm an Attorney in Fact ,the Public Pretenders [oops sorry Defenders] they give to those who can't afford an Attorney are a joke ,they work for the best interest of the courts ,their job is to enrich the coffers of the Judicial Corporation [which is a moneymaking enterprise just like all other corporation such as WalMart ect.] they plea bargan with the innocent to trick them into believeing they have done something they need to be punished for [ There are the guilty also - I deal with the innocent prosecuted under 'The Color Of Law' which isn't Constitutional ,nor Common Law ,it is a System of Justice sold by The Law Enforcement Corporation Of America ,My city of Rockford ,Illinois just got the NEW software with all the EXPANDED laws they can FLEECE the UNSUSPECTING and UNKOWLEDGABLE good citizens of America to SUBMIT ,OBEY ,be a good little sheeple and hand over your hard earned loot for breaking 'OUR' laws [ Can anyone show me anything anyone has signed saying that the Judicial system is in control of my life from cradle to grave ? I'd seriously doubt it , there are no POLICE in America ,there used to be ,now they are LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ,and are hired for the soul purpose of making money for their perspective villages ,towns ,cities and states . they do very little in the way of public safety
They call Prison Public Safety ,BULL ,warehouse for bodies ,most prisons are controlled by organized gangs ,the Prisons in most states get $1500 a day for each prisoner they house [pretty sweet deal] they pocket most of it as they don't pay prison guards much and they spend very little on the prisoners ,look at the Sheriff in Arizona ,he brags about feeding his prisoners garbage ,Maybe I should move to Arizona and help some of the unfortunates in TENT CITY ,I spouted off enough for now ,thanks for listening and letting me vent some steam

sugarshorts: prison opened my eyes and taught me alot society and authority. I hung out w/ mostly lifers one girl was in there for setting her husband on fire. The justice system didnt seem to care that he been beating her for 13 yrs. or that there was 2 o3 dozen times they had been called out to her house and was only arrested twice. He put her in the hospital 6 times and the icing on the cake she had a restraining order on him. He broke down the door beat her unrecognizable then fell asleep on her bed. Whene she finaly came to she got a 5 gallon bucket of gas threw it on him and set him on fire. A person will only take so much abuse before they snap. He was burned over 20% of his body. Nothing happend to him she got life. At least he cant beat me is what she said to me. thats our justice system. I 100% agree the justice system isn't about truth or fairness its about the money.

hitsugaya252: hi sugar...you were prisoned because you were regarded as a threat that time, more likely. But you became a real person later,i don't think its because of prison. you changed because you came out of that addiction.
since you are an experienced 1, i solicite you to tell something about prison life.
it must felt like iron rods embed into the body. how are the people inside prison treated?
only well off criminals were treated nicely in prison, i guess.
you enhanced your career and lived a succesful life but many are like the food thrown into a lair of wild beast, their career tarnishes.
And how the other criminals that you knew in, spent their life? Are they also able to change themself?
by the way my birthday is in 19 FEB
i'm not supposed to say this but can u change picture that represents you?
