davidk14: Outback says: There were many more interesting developments in Central and South America when Socialism clashed with Capitalism.

The Cuban revolution which exists even today.Any Socialist who looks to this as an example should remember that we couldnt even be able to have this debate in Cuba today as we would be locked up.

David sayseronism in Argentina
An economic, political, and social ideology called “social justice”, the combination of nationalism, and social democracy. It is the form of government in Argentina that exalts nationalism and attempts to accommodate the interests of business, industry, labor and the poor. This form of government highly subsidizes its military, private industry, public works, and the poor. Post WW2 , Peronism had been highly influential in Argentine politics and which resulted in Argentina's record for its inefficiency, bankrupt civil services, profitless industries and strong unions. Peronistic governments have also been accused of pursuing policies that abuse the human rights of Argentine citizens.

David says:
Faced with a deep recession, Cuba’s government is scaling back socialism in an attempt to save it. BY FRANCES ROBLES, MIAMIHERALD

As the Cuban government struggles through a deep recession, its leaders have begun picking away at socialism in order to save it. But experts say the Cuban government is simply trying another desperate fix to stem the slide of a failed economy that buckled long ago. "I think what they are trying to do is prepare the people for a hard landing," said Cuba expert Jonathan Benjamin-Alvarado of the University of Nebraska. Raúl Castro has been saying that the country's severely battered economy needs fixing. In a widely quoted August speech, Castro said Cuba was spending more than it made. ‘Within the conditions of our imperfect socialism, due to our own shortcomings, two plus two often adds up to three.'' Since he took office, Castro restructured the nation's agricultural system to give idle land to farmers, hoping they would revive a deeply troubled state-run agricultural industry plagued by inefficiency. He also allowed taxi drivers to have private licenses; many were working illegally anyway. Castro suggested it was time to rethink fundamentals such as deep subsidies for everyone. "Cuba goes through cycles of strict ideological code, but that code does not function. That code leads to corruption, leads to the black market and leads to economic collapse," said Baruch College professor Ted Henken.

Outback says: Costa Rica,Guatemala,Brazil,Uruguay,Cuba(bay of pigs),Panama are all examples of Capitalism(mainly being represented by the U.S) opposing Socialism/Communism.
The war in Vietnam/Cambodia is another example.

davidk14: Outback says: One of the most interesting developments was in Chile when Allende came to power,He was the first ever elected Socialist leader in the whole of Central or South America. What happened next was a Fascist under Pinochet was supported by Capitalism (U.S and other western countries)was overthrown in a violent coup,So much for democracy. Today in South America you have many examples of Socialism. You need only look at Bolivia and Venezeula.

Outback says: Venezeula is an interesting example of where Capitalism and Socialism has been joined together.Whilst there have been crackdowns there still exists a vocal opposition and media who have repeatedly tried to overthrow Hugo Chavez: Wikipedia: Hugo_Chavez

David Says: The Impact of the Sandinistas on Nicaragua
Copyright 1998, by Jorian Polis Schutz

The Sandinistas were influenced by three major groups of thought. First, and perhaps most heavily, they were influenced by the teachings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. communistic economy and complete equalization of wealth, incorporating both Marxist and socialist ideas.
Political oppression, freedom violations, and oligarchy--these are all things that the Somoza regime represented, and sadly enough, the Sandinistas inherited. The left-wing turned out to be not much of an improvement from the right-wing, as has been the case in history. Despite this, though, there is a rather happy ending to the story of the Nicaraguan people. In 1990, Daniel Ortega, president of Nicaragua, decided to hold free elections within Nicaragua. This controversial decision occurred for several reasons. First, the collapse of the Soviet Union had left Nicaragua seemingly without allies. International pressure was mounting, and many countries were imposing heavy economic sanctions on Nicaragua. Second, the contra war, going on for more than a decade, was getting unbearable to Nicaraguans, who wanted nothing but peace, and a chance to succeed in global markets. For these reasons Ortega gave the presidency up to elections—a noble act that put him in front of the race for president. He lost though, barely, to Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, previously of the junta, who had split off and formed the political party National Union of Opposition (UNO). Chamorro became president, and was immediately faced with an endless amount of conflicts to resolve. Chamorro now had to deal with all of the Sandinistas errata. The contras, appeased by free elections, had ceased fighting and even put forth a candidate for the presidency. With the return of peace, Chamorro was faced with a new problem. The landlords whom the Sandinistas had confiscated he land from were now returning to reclaim their land. The peasants who had lived on the land in collectives ever since the early 1980’s, naturally refused to leave. This conflict and other similar Sandinista-induced conflicts were filling Chamorro’s domestic platter. But now there was peace—and there was democracy.

writerboy: All I'm reading is the same paranoid nonsense about Socialism being akin to Communism and destroying all life as we know it. You can play with numbers and quote encyclopedias all you want. The fact is that life for the people of Finland or Norway or Sweden is more human, more humane, more liveable, than life for the average American. It isn't a big rat race there, all work, work, work, and suck up to the boss or else. There it's more relaxed, people have more holidays, more vacation time, more time with families. They don't have to worry about health care or freezing in the dark from lack of heat. And you know what, those countries are not exactly hurting economically - not compared to the US, that bastion of free enterprise and capitalism.

john1576: Writerboy. Yes I understand what you are saying when you sing the praises of life in Continental Europe. But it is not simply a question of politics, it is also interpersonal attitudes. I once got into a discussion with a Chap about how different life in Europe was to life in England, with regards to the friendly work atmosphere and better social conditions etc in Europe. He interrupted me saying; 'because the people there are better people, they deserve a better society than people here'. I think his point was, that the rather low lifestyle of Britain and America is suited to the trashy people who live there and here. Naturally I do not agree with that. But it seems a lot of people in positions of power do.

davidk14: Population of Sweden approx: 9.2 Million or 3% of the US
Population of Norway approx: 4.8 million or 1% of the US
Population of Finland approx: 5.3 million or 2% of the US

Total of these three countries approx: 19.3 million or 6.4% of the population of the United States.

California has over 24 million people and is the 2nd most liberal progressive state in the country and has the worst deficit in the country.

There's no comparing a less stressful life style of smaller populations like Sweden, Norway and Finland.
