Mask Of Dionysus: There have been many forms of slavery through History. The worst were ones introduced and managed by rich white men. Mask Of Dionysus: Um....when the States had slavery, there was plenty of raping and illegitimate children trulyred: mask of dionysus ... you should be aware that notyh african slavers regularly raided the english and irish coasts for slaves . they took them back to Africa and used them pretty much as white people used black people ... it`s not colour or race that determines who is the "master" , it`s power , mindset and the ability . By the way ... black africans and arab traders used to enslave their neighbours and sell them on to white slavers ... it was rare to have white people going into the countryside , raiding villages .
Mask Of Dionysus: Greece had slavery but it was mixed. Greeks, whites and blacks. There were also Africans who went to Greece. It was a better life there for them Slave or not. originality: To answer a question on the first page of this thread... yes native americans owned slaves. For one you have the aztecs... they had slaves which were distinct from the war captives they sacrificed. Also you have the comanche which came to power when the horse was introduced to the americas, they basically lived off of 3 things, buffalo, horses, and slaves. Stories of their brutality were generally not exaggerated. Of course there were much more peaceful and civilized tribes (and by civilized I mean they had higher ideas about the rights of those outside their tribe). You really can't generalize about Native Americans, there's vast differences between the tribes. Slavery is pervasive throughout history; whether it's good or bad depends on two things; 1. how the slaves became enslaved, and 2. how they are treated. If they are taken captive against their will in an unjust war, you can say that's bad; if they're treated cruelly and have no rights or benefits, that's bad too. But there are many examples of more nuanced situations; putting someone in slavery to pay off a debt they otherwise cannot, or accepting when they offer to be a slave because they have no other means of supporting themselves. Often taking someone as a slave was a burden because it meant more mouths to feed, so it could be an act of charity or even an act of mercy because otherwise the person would be ostracized and homeless, perhaps with no way to feed their family. And many cultures had a system of rights for slaves, including the ability to purchase freedom. So whether it's good or bad depend on whether the master and the servant are good or bad, and the situation surrounding them. LiptonCambell: That's a ridiculous claim to make. Having limited choices is not the same as being treated as property rather than human. | Politics Chat Room 72 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
