Should the US intervene to promote democracy? (Page 6)

HottandSexi_Lexi
HottandSexi_Lexi: America is under the impression that we have to go to everyone's rescue and being a world power I believe we have to. Honestly, I'm all for supporting the military in any predicament we get ourselves into. And without the support of us here at home, we ill not succeed anywhere!

here is one Silver Star for our brave forum warrior Dave.

Born into freedom, they remind me
To go and protect it blindly
All of your life is depending
On who and what you're defending

Move in for the kill, 'til they finally get their fill

Raised to believe all the hatred
While all of the innocence faded
Trust in yourself to follow
The lies just get harder to swallow

Lay down your life
For what you are
Live the sacrifice
For a silver star

Die with the best of intentions
Led to the end by perception
All of our lives are depending
On who and what we're defending

Lay down your life
You've come this far
Sacrifice, trade your life
For a silver star

Q_Jordon: Absolutely not. The United States should allow people of nations to determine if and when they choice to create a democracy. Democracy means different things to different people, and what takes hold in one country may not be what United States considers a democracy - it may be worse due to a forced democracy.

niklesh nani: I Threw a Surprise Party for a Friend

I wasn't really planning to do it. I decided the very last minute, but everything worked out perfectly.

It kind of hit me very early today that I haven't seen her in a long time. She's always been there for me even when I didn't want to see her.

So, when I awoke today I decided to do it.

It wasn't a big deal. I mean I didn't go through a lot of trouble. It would have been great if I had invited more people to join me.

Maybe you. I don't know how really busy you are and if you'd even care to be there, but it would have been great.

The surprise party was held in my back yard.

Just before her arrival I sat alone and listened to the birds. The chimes that I got from Marianne could be heard in the distance as the air began to stir. It reminded me of church bells I used to hear back when I was a child.

There was no particular song played on the chimes but I read on the enclosed pamphlet that the notes each chime was created to ring are the exact same notes in the song Ave Maria.

How perfect!

A little tired from the day before, I thought about what I would say when she arrived. My thinking wasn't clear, perhaps I should have written everything down, but I was confident that when the moment came I could express myself well enough to make her feel important.

That was my intention anyway. I mean I wanted this to be a big thing. I wanted to make her feel as important as she has always made me feel.

I love looking at the sky, I get lost in puffy white clouds and I wave at airplanes as they pass overhead on the way to places I long to be.

Suddenly, from behind me a small gathering of sparrows and starlings flew overhead.

I thought how majestic and awesome that would be for her to see upon her arrival. Not fancy doves released from a cage at a specified time, but a moment unexpected and breathtakingly planned by God.

It was about to all come together. Everyone was there. The butterflies, birds, squirrels, chipmunks and even our hummingbirds.

I could see her off in the distance,

"Wait, I forgot my camera!" I thought. But there was no time. She was about to arrive and I didn't want to spoil it.

There she was. All the perfectly wonderful things I thought about saying suddenly left me.

All I could think to say was "Wow!" Followed by "Thanks, God!"

She was awesome. As if on cue, another group of birds flew toward her. The chimes responded to a gentle breeze and I stood there in awe.

"surprise" I whispered as she continued her approach.

"Right on time, as always" I said more clearly.

"I should be here for you every day. You are always there for me."

Yes, it was a new day and I surprised her by being there at sunrise, arms open wide, and mind set on making it mine. All too often I waste moments like this. Too many times I have wasted entire days moaning and complaining about how my days are going.

But who controls that? Me.

You see, every day arrives the same way all fresh and new. What we choose to do in that day, how we choose to see it is up to us.

Time is a like money. We get to choose how we spend it.

I wish you could have been there. Perhaps tomorrow. Let's throw another surprise party together. Me here and you there wherever you are.

Check the exact time for the sunrise where you live and throw a surprise party.

It's not just another day... it's another chance!

"I wish you enough!"

devilsAdvocate2: To go back to a post at the start of this " it would not benefit us to. We cannot help nations that will continually harm us more and more. If we are not gaining from intervening; then we cannot afford to" This statement sums it all up. Americas wars with the exception of the civil war have been about profit nothing else. The idea of war has been sold to the people over and over again by the war profiteers who now run the place. This is why so many like Ron Paul advocate removing american troops from all WAR on foreign soil. Your political and business (one in the same) elites are not only murdering people of other countries but they are murdering your own sons and daughters by sending them to fight a war for profits.

YetiFinder: First the US should see in there own place whether they have democracy or dictatorship then they should intervene to promote democracy in other nations. Why not first US declare democracy in their own soil. I do not see any democracy in US but I see there dictatorship and even the people do not have right speak. Stop intervention in others matters.

BlueBlue30
BlueBlue30: Intervening to promote democracy has turned out to be an excuse to go to War and thus serve the needs of certain special interest groups. The U.S. does not support democracy in many cases. They have propped up dictatorships in latin america and the middle east for decades because it served their interests. They did not care about democracy in these cases... As long as the dictator was willing to be a willing servant to U.S interests (example-decades of financial support to Egyptian president Mubarak). In other cases, the U.S. has specifically tried to overthrow democratically elected governments (Chile 1970's), (Niccaragua 1980's). Furthermore, the U.S. has launched pre-emptive wars against Iraq, but did nothin when genocides killing millions of people were taking place in Rwanda and Darfur.
That being said, the U.S. has made beneficial contributions to democracy in some areas, especially after WWII (Germany, Japan), but has since then, largely been living off that legacy by manipulating public opinion through propaganda while violating international law. These are not my opinions, these are facts.
The U.S. has a great opportunity to promote democracy through dialogue, trade, and example. Anyone who argues that the resultant killings of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens caused by a war based on lies, was a good thing, is insane. The most dangerous aspect of this intervention and warfare is that it threatens our own Western democracies. Think about how many rights, freedoms and liberties have been lost in the past 10 years ie. Patriot Act. We are on dangerously thin ice and I hope we can come to our senses before it's too late... I will finish with a quote...
"No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."
- James Madison

socialdistortion: I think the US should get it's own house in order before meddling in another country's affairs. The reason America is so hated in certain parts of the world is their desire to be the world's police but one look inwards and you will realise that your country is far from perfect.
