Cherokee Indians expel Black people from Citizenry chronology: The Cherokee Nation has succeeded in excluding Black people from being members of the Tribal Lands Citizenship. Black people were originally members of the Tribe as Slaves owned by Tribe Members. The reason for the move is said to be motivated by economic considerations as money is given to Tribal Citizens (less Citizens means more money to each member). United States Courts have tried to protect the Black peoples Rights by forbidding the exclusion, but the Courts decision was over ruled. A Black former member of the Tribe has commented that this is nothing short of Racism and Apartheid in America. Malobear: Some reading for you to do Chrono and anyone else interested. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_freedmen_controversy This is the home website of the Cherokee of Oklahoma http://www.cherokee.org/ My grand mother and mother is Seminole. The Seminoles follow what most tribes in this country require to be considered a part of that tribe. http://www.semtribe.com/FAQ/ Read the section "Genealogy" and there is 3 parts within that section. (Edited by Malobear) chronology: Thanks for the Link Malo. But I have read all I want to on this subject. It seems what the Cherokee Nation is requiring is that people provide paperwork proving their Right to Cherokee Citizenship. This seems reasonable enough, but the Media are presenting this as a requirement aimed at Black Members (or now former Members) of the Cherokee Nation. You may be able to answer a question related to this Malo. Are American Natives born on Reservations automatically granted U.S. Citizenship? While checking out the background of this Topic I found so many contradictory comments. Such as 'American Natives are granted automatic Citizenship at birth' and alongside this; 'the procedure for Native Americans to aquire American Citizenship is very simple, after leaving the Tribal Lands they can claim Citizenship after 7 years' (that is not 'automatic Citizenship' is it). OCD_OCD: If his ancestors are not on the Cherokee Rolls his ancestry must be proven, along with his percentage. chronology: Just curious, who decides who goes on 'The Rolls'? The whole situation sounds disagreeable. Black Cherokees have shared the hardships of the Nations History, should they not share it benefits in good times? Dash it all, the whole business sounds 'cheap'. OCD_OCD: Doesn't matter whether they are black or not. They still have to prove their percentage in order to be added to the Indian Rolls. The "black" thing has been blown out of proportion. chronology: I checked on how the story has developed. I seems Black folks who were connected to the Cherokee are still facing 'pushback' when they try to integrate with the Tribe. Only around 3000 former Black Slaves of the Cherokee have applied for Tribal Citizenship. That is out of 40000 who are eligible. alexgal9999999: Do you know how many black people kept BLACK slaves Or is it too hush for left wing political correctness chronology: alex. Well that may be so, but as far as we know Black people today are not trying to exclude other black people from their society or strip them of membership of their community like is happening among the Cherokee, so what is the point you are making? In some ways this story is not about 'race' or even about 'politics' it is about the principle of suddenly excluding people who have lived among their fellow society members and declaring them 'none citizens' . If this just happens without all people protesting against such actions it sets a very bad Civil Rights precedent. chronology: alex really. This is not about disrespecting the Cherokee people at all. The Cherokee have a long and proud history. But it is the same principle of saying the 'Highland Clearance' in Scotland was wrong. The Highland clearance was an incident where poor Scottish tennants were evicted to make way for huge Private Estates. Folks everywhere, from New York City, to London and Berlin protested the evictions saying they were callous and an abuse of power. People need to protest the exclusion of Black people by the Cherokee. The Estate owners in Scotland were not bad people, they just did not see what they were doing was wrong on 'general principle' . Hopefully the Cherokee will see the same. alexgal9999999: I have had it with this lot They can't get on with noone They flee there own hell holes After butchering each other Enough all ready I had nothing to do with Slavetrading In the 1600s🐴 | Politics Chat Room 86 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
