It is not the Social programmes that 'brought Greece to her knees', it is the evasion of taxes mostly by the rich that contributed to the crisis. (this and of course other factors). The Social programmes are not for anyone to lazy around as you might think, they're there for a purpose for the Greeks.

Azimuth_Predator: Ok first of all, i want to warn Jack not to take you two seriously.
Second, jack made a valid point of a person following someones economy.
I have my own tactics to follow someones economy and i have worked in the shipping industry which transported natural resources such as crude oil
(i have mentioned this before) which is a big branch of the worlds economy.
I think Jack,Zen,Kat,Marius are aware of what crude oil produces.
Another way like Jack said, is to ask someone from a
specific country on what's going on. And by that he means ask a list of questions so you can make mathematical estimations of employment, crime,prices,rents,utilities ext ext.
There are various Sites you can do this as well as read some news papers which in your point of view are accurate.
As for American TV and channels such as Fox and CNN,NBC ext ext. Its clearly obvious to all Europeans that the are creating news rather than reporting it. And that is dangerous cause people get miss informed. America as we all know is the most corrupted country. And there is a very accurate documentary which i recommend OCP and David to watch.
Now you are going to ask me how do i know if this Documentary is accurate? Simple, just google all the info you see from the doc so you can confirm the truth.
Also try to talk to as many people as you can which are not American. See what they have to say.

Jack lets not forget the root of the problem which is not only the social program.
Lets mention the EURO failure and that Greece and Ireland and Portugal should have never ever joined due to their productivity which is not as competitive as other EU countries.
And lets not forget about Goldman Sachs which created all that debt out of think air. The numbers were just impossible lol
And of course the corruption of politicians which just went along with the Corporations.

But i also have to blame the Greek citizens for voting the same families for 30 years and their lack of knowledge when it comes to economize.
They fell in to the interest loan trap from the banks. They kept on getting loans with out paying them back cause the did not make enough money to cover it.
I also blame the banks for giving them the loans cause it was obvious the could not pay them back.

Same scenario in Ireland as well...

I have noted several times that we have economic problems here and I have stated what I believe the causations are. I support the US. I do not support our current government. If I did slavishly support any political administration of the U.S., then that would make me the "puppet" that Azmouth believes me to be.

And BTW, we don't want a "free" health care system because no matter what you believe, it isn't "free". Someone has to pay for it.

Free Health Care system is called Free Health Care system, you can argue the semantics on that if you wish but we also have Free Health Care, paid of course by our own taxes etc...think common sense will make anyone see that.

Comrade_: Davidk the word "Free" isn't used as a descriptive word or adjective. The entire thing is labelled "Free Health Care". Let me dumb it down for you: with "Free Health Care" a person can entire the hospital and get treated without actually paying (that person may/may not be paying taxes). The Service is however paid by the government by taxes. To call military as being "FREE" is dumb...but I guess you were gripping at straws so all is forgiven.
