Obama Re-elected for a 2nd term

Sarcastic Dots: When it comes to politics, I've learnt that the loudest obsessives of an unpopular ideology tend to come to the internet because their views gain no traction in the world outside of a computer screen. It's not that I'm calling the Republican party, as a whole, politically sour, but social conservatism is going the way of the dodo in most of the developed world.

Coffrey: I actually disagree a bit with you, Dots. Let's take wireclub, for instance. The crazy conservatives are by far the majority. I mean, of course there are crazy conservative websites but as the internet being a microcosm of society, the ratio is in favor of rational thought over crazy crackpot conspiracies. However, entertainment value, e.g. "sensationalism", overrides both, unfortunately.

JustinsWords:

I believe the world set unrealistic expectations for Barack Obama's presidency in the very first place. Most of us had hope that Obama would roll back some of George W Bush's excesses, including its trigger-happy foreign policy and lax economic regulations, among others. But we have forgotten that most of the time, despite the best personal intentions of presidents, the presidency often consumes the president himself.

Obama has been and will always be (in his second term in office) working within the system. He cannot change the system; no one man can accomplish that. If you look at some of his policies over the last four years, you see almost no difference in America's foreign policy in terms of substance. Granted, Obama's foreign policy style is less unilateral and seeks co-operation with other allies, but George W Bush was also less unilateral in his second term in office.

A good example to illustrate my point that Obama's hands are essentially tied by the system he's working in is the failure of the Obama administration to shut down Guantanamo Bay detainment camp. He understands that the world views Guantanamo as a symbol of American hypocrisy when it comes to torture, and that the prison camp has become a magnet for jihadists around the world to attract new recruits. But he has so far failed to shut down the prison because of practical (where to send those prisoners to) and domestic political reasons. What about the illegal drone war that Obama has escalated? What about America's intervention in the civil war in Syria? America has not stopped behaving like the world's police man under Obama's watch. He may personally prefer to focus inward, but the system he's working in demands that he continue America's intervention in other sovereign countries.

Just for the record, I believe Bashar al-Assad's place is in the dock of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Either he face justice in a courtroom or he'll join Gaddafi in meeting his end in the streets, he has to make that choice fast. But America should stay out of the business of intervening in other countries' fight and focus on its economy and how to face off its next strongest competitor in the world - China.

And anyone who thinks there's going to be more 'change' in Obama's second term is just as naive and clueless as when he first took the oath of office.

Aura: Look, all this 'there isn't any change' comes from mainly straight white people. It sort of makes sense to me that the first black president will focus more on civil rights than anything else. And so far, gays can openly serve in the military, women are allowed to fight on the front lines if they chose and people get health insurance so they don't get stuck with huge bills if something happens. Sounds like change to me.
And he said he would push for gay marriage in all states plus made science a non-issue by saying god wants us to take care of the earth so global warming deniers are out of arguments for opposing new rules on emissions (very smart move if you ask me)
In fact the more change, the more people will hate him. Change is scary.

GeraldTheGnome: Obama, even in his second term is an idiot. New rules on emissions ? Emissions by humans is causing global warming ? A very dumb move if you ask me. Change is good, the type of change though can improve things or make things worse. What are these new rules on emissions ? Are they productive or counter-productive ? I'll remember the global warming when on the same day one part of the world is hotter than usual and the other part of the world is colder than usual. It debunks the whole entire global warming myth that we are all to swallow. Reality change is when they see what is productive or counterproductive to them, not what is convenient for a government that is so desperate for a cash grab after dragging the country down further into a vast morass with the name of Recession tagged to it.

Mask Of Dionysus: Gnome, you guys have fallen behind. Big time.

It is not "Global Warming", it is "Climate Change". When they first started talking about it, they said the coldest regions would feel it first. Canada is a cold region, not the States. We are feeling it up here, large. The States is a major polluter so they should get their act in gear.

Technically, you are very wrong. The Western Hemisphere is not Statsian. Keep dreaming.

GeraldTheGnome: Technically I am right because I'm not referring to the 'Statsian' bit, though maybe Statsian would be better than the generic insular misuse of the word that is used. Climate Change does exist, there's evidence of it happening in some areas, yes pollution in the US should be reduced but some measures to do so are not always the best ideas to come up with. The problem is, at least in Australia, that some people think that global warming and climate change are one and the same. There are many cold regions that are warmer than usual right now, that is climate change, there are also many cold regions that are colder than usual right now, in a nutshell that shows that there is no indicator of global warming going on, only that of climate change instead.

Climate change can be as simple as a place going from a cold and wet place to a cold and dry place, so climate change not necessarily about a temperature rise or fall, just dry to wet or reverse etc. Still, I think Obama was very lucky to con his way to a second term after his shortfalls, then again all of the ones he was up against had their fair share of glitches on the way which didn't get them over the 'electoral finish line' first.

Either way both of them shouldn't be on here because their ways are too extreme and counter-productive to the majority of people on this site. The majority of people on this site are not of the far left or the far right.

Besides you and I aren't busy 'dodging bullets' when it comes to the gun issue in the US like Obama is. I'm not of the far left or the far right, I have no time for them, this site shouldn't either.

Aura
Aura: This isn't even about places that see climate change right now. It's about co2 and other green house gasses that trap heat so the earth will heat up. Are there certain places that do or do not show temperatures rising? Well, so what? We need to do something before the problem becomes real everywhere. Like the hole in the ozone layer. In the end we banned CFC and in time it can restore itself. But we could have said, and some probably did say :"hey the ozone isn't low everywhere, just a few spots, it's not a global problem."
Or back when we had the acid rain, forests looked sad and damaged. But all the factories screamed bloody murder about their precious bottom lines. In the end they had to do something about emissions, and look now, forests look a whole lot better. They didn't have to die off just to get the point across. And the economy and most factories survived as well.
So the is no global warming right now, is not a good excuse to not make sure there won't be any in the future.
