ghostgeek: Asiababe, there are probably parts of the UK, where I live, that you would find less than congenial because of the attitudes of their Muslim inhabitants. Shame people can't all live and let live but that's the way the world is.

Zanjan: Ghost, a country has a history of ALL its peoples; whatever is very old should go to that country's museum, regional or national, because it's a heritage piece. That heritage belongs to all the people of the nation to see, learn from, and appreciate. There's no material gain.

As you know, many relics are sold on the black market (stolen), where a few rich investors re-sell them for big profits. Nobody gets to see them; many are lost. We're most fortunate that some of these have been rescued by another country and given a safe home.

There was a museum in South America that had a huge hoard of regional, ancient tribal relics, thousands of years old. That's classified as a world heritage.
The museum burned down and all of it was lost. Apparently, the fire was due to neglect. Seems to me, when a country holds ancient pieces belonging to a different country, there was no other safe place to store them.

Great Britain has re-patriated many ancient Egyptian artifacts because Egypt now has a world class Museum. These aren't national treasures - they're so ancient, they're a world heritage.

So are our dinosaur skeletons - we share some in the interest of science.

Parthenon Marbles: Who do you think is paying for the restoration of the Parthenon? It's the European Union so the Greeks should shut the heck up.

ghostgeek: Why is it alright to put Egyptian Mummies in museums while tribal skeletons that end up on show have to be repatriated and reburied?

Zanjan: My guess is the mummies have no family left to speak up.

I'm not a fan of grave-robbing; the dead should remain in their resting spots and not be put on display, notwithstanding that some tribal cultures disagree. Science hasn't taught us anything useful by their macabre curiosity.

Having said that, I once visited a museum with shrunken heads. I was too young to know better and immediately regretted that. Same for knowing anyone who has a crucifix with a bloodied effigy nailed to it or mounted animal heads hanging on their wall...........so barbaric!

ghostgeek: The trouble with shrunken heads is that just looking at them in a cabinet, you don't know if they're genuine human heads or come from monkeys. A bit like all the saint's bones every church and cathedral had to have at one time.
