kittybobo34: Capitalism has stages, the first ones are great, lots of little businesses, most people on the same level as far as income, lots of work if you want it.

The last stages, monopoly, crony capitalism, where a few own everything and the rest are pushed to bare survival wages if they can find work at all.

America reached that point in the late 1800's and moved to anti trust legislation, worker rights, and laws regulating corporate behavior. We had a brief flowering of middle class because of it. But, corporations have managed to own, and control the legislature so we are sliding back toward Corporate heaven.

chronology: Ghost, sorry Old Boy, but if I may suggest you have got it wrong. In theory capitalism is no longer capitalism when it has a fully automated production system. But not if it transforms it's consumer base.. With a global customer market corporate manufacturers Taylor their products to comply with global consumption. This system sent Japan into near bankruptcy at the turn of the millennium. Japanese business was doing fantastic. The global Japanese business companies were rocking hard. But Japan as a society was on the verge of financial collapse.

America is still a long way from that situation, but as Wall Street stagers from one year of record profits to another, while working Americans work short hours and Lawmakers wonder just how they can pay bills.

The global market looks like being here to stay. But frankly how long Lawmakers and working Americans can keep struggling by to get by, while Wall Street rake's in shed loads of money who knows.

ghostgeek: Think about it, what's more important to the system in the long-term: workers or consumers? I'm guessing that it will be consumers. So, instead of paying people to work, pay them to consume instead. As for jobs, let the rich pay to have one of those while the poor bury themselves under a mountain of goodies.

kittybobo34: The only system that seems to work is the Scandinavian version of democratic socialism,. Taxes are high, but everyone is assured health care and education. Capitalism is limited to items people can choose to buy or not.

kittybobo34: And corporations pass that tax back to the consumer. It seems like a pyramid scheme, where there is never enough money to cover all the costs.
There are several small countries experimenting with the universal income concept, the rest are waiting to see how it works

ghostgeek: Producers and consumers exist in a symbiotic relationship. Neither can exist for long without the other. Therefore, why shouldn't those big fat greedy corporations pay people to be consumers?
