ghostgeek: Had it and done it. And all the while the machines take over. They'll provide everything for free except the things you really crave. For the freedom to take a walk, talk to someone or listen to the birds sing, they'll charge you the earth.

ghostgeek: Seems poor old America is getting a kicking again:

The US Space Force has defended its newly unveiled camouflage uniforms after they were roundly mocked on social media.

The force, officially launched by US President Donald Trump last month, posted a picture of the uniform to its Twitter account.

The uniform in the picture has a woodland camouflage design with badges embroidered on the arm and chest.

Reacting to the uniform, many critics had the same question: "Camo in space?"

Clearly, they are going after aliens who do unpardonable things in the woods at night.

chronology
chronology: Ghost old man, 'red neck cammo' is the standard uniform of virtually all armies these days.
Britain's famous Red Coat uniform was last used in battle during the first Boar War. The Afrikaner boys could not believe their good fortune seeing British soldiers in bright red uniforms. They picked them off like ducks on water out in the field. Since then virtually every army wear's practically the same uniform.

Americans were legendary for the good quality of the clothes they wore. But today even the quality of the uniform is the same with most armies. But the pentagon does insist on minimum standards. I can remember jungle equipment that was virtually a joke. Boots that never fitted anyone, one guy cut the toe caps off his jungle boots. The best was the map's. When we tried to use the maps we found that there was virtually nothing to orientate them with and compass's were were useless without a sextant. Today GPS is standard.

chronology: Maybe ghost, but if ever asked the fine young men and women of the U. S. Army about this they will most likely tell you that they only have so much room in their lockers for the uniforms they have already.

chronology
chronology: Arguy, kind of unfair to the ' MaCnamarer 100.000.' . They won some rough battle's in Vietnam, they may not have scored top marks in reading and maths etc. But hey they sure could hold their own fighting off Vietcong, great set of Guys.
They were also really 'American' . The last thing the Pentagon wanted to do back then was field a Waffen SS style aggressive highly trained shock troops. The Waffen shock troops were the finest fighting men the world has ever seen, but really they were waisted on the frozen mud of Russia.

ghostgeek: In today's world, with its high tech weaponry, it seems a little redundant to put a man in uniform and give him a gun.

chronology
chronology: Ghost, Guys in uniform still do great work. I always remember the legendary 'LERPS' in Vietnam. The Lerps were Long Range Recon Patrols who went deep into enemy territory. Some of their missions became the stuff of legend. Amongst their regular jobs was to apprehend enemy troops for intelligence questioning. The Lerps would be dropped off somewhere by helicopter, then they would slowly make their way into known North Vietnamese Army area inside South Vietnam. When they found an enemy camp they would scope out the troops looking for a good subject to take. Radio Operators were prize target's. When they apprehended the target person they would take him back to U.S. compounds to be handed over for questioning by U.S. Army Intelligence. Subjects like that could be treasure troves of information.

What amazes me is how the Lerps navigated for tens of miles, mostly at night through the jungle. This was in the days before GPS. But even today former Lerps never talk about their missions. But they must have some stories to tell when they meet up with their old buddies. Brave men one and all.
