ghostgeek: Be careful with your jokes, otherwise the future might bite you:

In the latest example of “Philip K Dick-inspired nightmare becomes real life,” Saudi Arabia just became the first nation to grant citizenship to a robot. The robot’s name is Sophia. It is artificially intelligent, friends with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin, and, arguably, a glimpse into the dark future that will kill us all. ...

It also serves as a tiny peek into a frightening future full of artificially intelligent beings, the capabilities of which we’ve barely pondered. In an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin, new Saudi citizen Sophia actually took a swipe at Elon Musk and his warnings about AI:

“My AI is designed around human values like wisdom, kindness, compassion. I strive to become an empathetic robots (sic),” Sophia said.

“We all believe you but we all want to prevent a bad future,” Sorkin said.

“You’ve been reading too much Elon Musk. And watching too many Hollywood movies,” Sophia said. “Don’t worry, if you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. Treat me as a smart input output system.”

chronology
chronology: ghost, I would be surprised if that Robot Lady was actually talking the way you describe. Down in Texas they have the most advanced Android around at the moment. It is a recreation of Phillip K Dick, it looks real as anything, but the vocal interaction is nothing like you describe in your Post, so I wonder about that Robot Lady you refer to. Androids will be able to converse with people easily in around 20 years time. In around 50 years people will be marrying Robots. If you want a glimpse at what a perfect life that will be read 'His Robot wife Patience' which you can find on Kindle. Why any rational person would want to marry a human is beyond me.

chronology: ghost, just checked out Amazon Kindle and Wesley Alison still has his book available there 'His Robot Wife' . The book actually explores the reality of Human Robot marriage. U.S. States each decide whether or not to make marriage between Robots and Humans legal. There is the usual vigilanty violence from religious nuts who label the humans marrying robots as 'perverts' .

ghostgeek: Enjoy beating robots while you still can. There is a 50 per cent chance that machines will outperform humans in all tasks within 45 years, according to a survey of more than 350 artificial intelligence researchers.

AI will master many activities a lot sooner, though. Machines are predicted to be better than us at translating languages by 2024, writing high-school essays by 2026, driving a truck by 2027, working in retail by 2031, writing a bestselling book by 2049 and surgery by 2053. In fact, all human jobs will be automated within the next 120 years, say respondents.

The survey, by the University of Oxford and Yale University, was sent to AI researchers who published in 2015 at one of two big conferences in the field – the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems and the International Conference on Machine Learning. In total, 352 people responded.

ghostgeek: In 1965, Turing’s colleague Irving Good pointed out that brainy devices could design even brainier ones, ad infinitum: “Thus the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make, provided that the machine is docile enough to tell us how to keep it under control.” It’s that last clause that has claws.

chronology: ghost. I checked out the interview with Sophia, am convinced that was a script interview. If you just sat down in front of her and asked her those questions she would almost certainly react like PKD in Texas, the answers would be like those from an Oija Board, random and disconnected.

ghostgeek: Just remember, the robots will be seeing you:

Even now, facial-recognition technology underpins China’s “sharp eyes” program, which collects surveillance footage from some fifty-five cities and will likely factor in the nation’s nascent Social Credit System. By 2020, the system will render a score for each of its 1.4 billion citizens, based on their observed behavior, down to how carefully they cross the street.
