ghostgeek: Is it time to get worried when one's elected representatives call for a ban on cartoon characters promoting junk food?

The Health and Social Care Select Committee has called for a ban on “brand-generated characters or licensed TV and film characters” which are used to promote foods high in fat, sugar or salt on broadcast and non-broadcast media.

Such a ban would mean that characters such as Tony the Tiger and the Milky Bar Kid would have to be dropped or used to promote healthier products. And cartoon characters from the latest summer blockbuster would no longer appear on the packaging or adverts for fast food.

chronology: Ghost, you are right. I remember a Doctor one time talking about this. He was saying how doctors have really misled the public about their options in lifestyle choice. Like he said, if people don't drink, smoke or get overweight they probably will live 10 years longer than people who do such things. But like he went on to say, people are not really going to enjoy those extra years of life. They will most likely be in pain most of the time, they will have little or no money, they will be vulnerable to physical and emotion abuse,

People tell him they have no desire to live long lives, they want to enjoy life while they have it and don't want to be lingering on in pain and senility in a wheel chair somewhere. He thinks people should have that choice, it is wrong to force them to live a long time in an old age they want nothing to do with.

ghostgeek: When I was growing up, yes it was a long time ago, nobody ever seemed to be worried about kids being fat. And, strange to relate, we had cartoons on cereal packets back then. So what's changed? Maybe the simple fact that nearly everyone seems to have forgotten what their feet are for.

Years ago lots of children got walked to school. Now they all seem to be chauffeured in the family car. So if M.P.s want to indulge their habit of banning ever more things that we all once took for granted, I say let them ban children being driven to school and see if that keeps the weight off the perishers.

ghostgeek: I went to the opticians recently, after they'd sent me enough reminders through the post that a whole forest must have been decimated to produce the paper. As expected, it was a case of buying a new pair of spectacles. What got me thinking, though, was all the frames on offer. At one end were the so-called cheap ones while further along were all the "designer" offerings. The only real difference I could see between them all was the price. That and the fact that some had a "name" attached. It seems to me that some people will pay a whopping great dollop of cash to buy a name. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't see the sense in it.

Angry Beaver: There was a report a while ago that the frames they have cost them an average of $5 per frame, cheap or designer, people are being conned.

ghostgeek: I once heard a report on the television about some Gloria Vanderbilt women's jeans. They were made in the same factory as cheaper jeans but had a bit of fancy stitching that cost next nothing to add. The only real difference between the two was the substantial price hike for the Vanderbilt jeans. People will pay handsomely for the right name.

ghostgeek: I've just found this:

The Miss America beauty pageant is scrapping its swimwear segment and will no longer judge competitors on physical appearance.

The evening gown section is also being axed, with contestants asked to wear something that makes them feel good and expresses their personal style instead.

Former winner Gretchen Carlson broke the news on ABC's Good Morning America.

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outwards, physical appearance. That's huge," she said.

So instead there will be interviews with the contenders, who will be asked about their passion, intelligence and understanding of the Miss America role.

ghostgeek: So what about the Mr Universe annual worldwide bodybuilding event? Isn't it just as demeaning for a man to be judged on his physical appearance as it is for a woman?

chronology: ghost, trust me there is nothing 'demeaning' about men Body Building. Back in the day I used to 'keep in shape' not 'pumped up' just slim and athletic with running and lifting weights. I used to talk to the Guys who did Pump up and believe me they live life to the full. They train hard, drive the best cars and bikes they can afford, dress in the best clothes they can, and when it comes to women, believe me, most women find these men to be magnets for their attention. Their lives are an endless cycle of Gym work outs, socialising, sun bed visits, and taking their stylish automobiles to car washes keeping them spotless and shining.

They only point I did notice about the Pumped up Guys was they nearly always got themselves into a competition clash with some other Hunk who just seemed to prompt them into a training frenzy. And some times the Guys would become so obsessed with training they would build their lives around Gyms and diets. Tuna, Eggs, Steak, Pasta, over and over.

But most of the Hunks live lives most men can only dream of. And when they get older, if they could, they would live those lives all over again.

chronology: Well no disrespect ghost, but you know little about bodybuilding. First off, most body builders run on a three day a week training schedule. You cannot workout the same muscle group day after day. There must be at least 24 hours between sessions so as to allow the tissue to build. As for the money side of thing, most of the Guys work at regular skilled jobs, or run their own businesses. So three nights a week training for around 2 hours lifting weights does not stop their employment. As for cars, same as anyone else, they either buy them or get them on credit like everyone else.

There is an entire subculture to body building ghost, from 'The Greek God' Guys, to the 'Hulk Hogan' type Guys. There are also the regular Athletes who also pump iron even tho they do not need to, they just enjoy the hard work of being 'ripped' . And like I said, whenever these Guys travel abroad they are swarmed over like celebrities by women who often just want to be photographed with them. And maybe more. .........

chronology: Well OK ghost Old Chap. But believe me, there will never be an end to Guys Pumping Iron and develloping their bodies to the style of Greek God statues. They love it, women adore them, and people flock to photograph them when they are on the beech or at the pool. So everyone is happy.
