It is true that, as Biden-Harris points out, only 55% of products that read Made in the USA are manufactured in the states. In many cases, this is due to supply chain and logistical constraints and the gutted manufacturing base across this nation. For example, Toyota ships assembled parts to plants in Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas to finish cars, bypassing trade tariffs and taxes. Biden-Harris has a goal of moving to a 60% threshold and eventually reaching 75%. Of course, this will spawn a series of workarounds and loopholes, which they also claim to end. It will only decrease the products made here or increase the price as corporations attempt to keep up with the lash of government bureaucracy. Where Donald Trump pointedly criticized China for currency manipulation and dumping, Biden takes a much different approach. During the COVID-19 lockdown, it became apparent that the U.S. supply chain was problematically dependent on Chinese manufactures, even for essential goods like personal protective equipment (PPE) and basic drugs such as antibiotics. Biden Harris wants “enhanced price preferences to select critical products and components. These preferences, once in place, would support the development and expansion of domestic supply chains for critical products by providing a source of stable demand for domestically produced critical products.” It sounds a lot like Nixon-era price controls, and that did not end well. There is one tried and true way to reduce prices and incentivize expansion: CUT TAXES. Instead, Biden-Harris wants to increase the dependency class to include businesses that receive more contracts from the government. If U.S. manufacturers get most of their business from the government, they are incentivized to play the lobby game. They are accountable to the government if they decide to socialize industry based on specific regulations and stipulations.
