Reparations. What does that mean ?

GeraldtheGnome
GeraldtheGnome: In the USA there are Black People (and I'm not going to label them African American) that go on about reparations. I know most of them do not bring it up but some do. Anyway one of them in one of those States there is pushing for or has brought about reparations there. What does it mean and is it a good or bad thing to have ? The reason why I don't refer to them as African Americans is because even out of those with dark skin or are half cast yet white in appearance (but are of the origin of at least one black race or dark at least) were never born in Africa. Slavery of the kind that was around in the USA that is no longer there is terrible. Is it right to give someone money or whatever as a belated compensation of what happened to an Ancestor that died well before the one that is now alive was even born ?

chronology
chronology: Gerald, Repetitions is a very complex subject indeed. If you visit Bavaria you will meet many Germans whose families were forced out of Suddetland after WW2. Around a million people were fo leave their homes and everything. They walked a long trail to Germany, many settling in Bavaria. To say that they were traumatized is an understatement, and around a hundred thousand died. For years afterwards the Suddetenland Germans held a yearly ceremony where they would lay flowers at the foot of'The Cross of the German East' to remember their fallen relative's.

Then there is the Arminian folks who died during the ethnic cleansing in Turkey.

The tragic Jewish folks during the 1930s, they suffered institutionalised racism.

Irish folks insist over 2.000.000. of their people died during the 19th century Great Hunger in Ireland.

Millions have died in Africa from Tribal violence.

It is not surprising America beats itself up none stop over slavery. The world's leading Liberal Democracy has to does it not? But American Slavery era is small potatoes compared with all the Tragedy in this world.

And don't forget the Communists. Murdered millions and drove millions out of their homes.

Do all the victims descendents deserve reperations? The United Nations in New York City will have a line longer than Black Friday at Walmart.

No disrespect at all to communities that have suffered as a result of human inhumanity. But perhaps we can all learn from the Suddetenland Germans. The young ladies in Derndill folk dress stood at the foot of the Cross during the past ceremonies and prayed for their lost past. They found peace doing that.

refurbwoodart: I just wonder how far they want to take reparations. I wonder if the Irish will get it for being indentured servants,or the Chinese will get it for only being paid 1/3rd what others did to work on the railroads,or the Mormons for being run off land they properly owned to avoid arrest,or the native Americans for the Europeans taking over their country. It a very slippery slope and blacks act like they are the only people in this country that were done wrong in the building of this country but in actuality they are the only ones that were awarded 40 acres and a mule in the Emancipation Proclamation so they are the only ones who have received any reparations yet.

chronology
chronology: Granma. The United States Government paid 20000 dollars to every Japanese American placed in detention camps during WW2. In today's money that would be around 40000 dollars.

Germany has paid out around 80 billion dollars since 1952 in monthly welfare cheque's to Jewish victims of racism in the Nazi era. Germany has expanded the pension program to include home visits to elderly Jewish people to make sure their final years are comfortable and as free of distress as possible.

For African Americans compensation could involve similar monthly cheques to guarantee that they are assured a dignified standard of living.

Americans are going to have to make some pretty big changes in how they view life and and money. Not just for African Americans. Automation and AI are set to replace 50pc of the American workforce in the next two decades. Most of the jobs being replaced are professional high paying jobs. Americans will have to accept that assistance from the Government is not just political vote catching, it is part of the infrastructure of future America.

refurbwoodart: Beaver I completely agree slavery ended 140 years ago and equality complete equality has been around over 50years but all we here time after time after time is I was done wrong,I was held down. Was Obama held down,I guess that how he got to be president being held down huh. The only people holding them down is themselves by complaining and bitching about something that was done to their great great grandfolks. Get over it its done. The subject is dead the North won 140 years ago het some gumption and get out and get it on your own like all us have to do. I wasn't handed a damn thing at all I worked my ass off to get it. To be honest I was refused 4 jobs because I wasn't black or minority. I applied for jobs I was more qualified for because of experience and hard work but it was given to black guys less qualified with less experienced just to fill a quota that was required that they have a minimum of minorities.
