Ten Commandments

XFixYourBrainX
XFixYourBrainX: Shouldn't we just follow the ten commandments the only laws that God gave to us, shouldn't that be enough to go to heaven?

These are the only technical rules that we were given to follow right?

Zanjan: What, did you stop reading history after 1,300 B.C.? There's way more Commandments than that so, can we take it you just picked out the easiest ones?

God doesn't force anyone to follow them - you either like them or you don't. You could follow one of them, 5 of them or all of them - your choice. If you actually like them, you'll execute them faithfully. Whatever your selection, practicing only sometimes but not other times is what people in hell do.

Sorry, rules alone wont get you to heaven or out of hell, if such a thing as purgatory exists.

ghostgeek: I believe there is only one commandment: Treat others the way you would want them to treat you. Following it won't get you to heaven, no such place exists, but it might make your stay on earth a little more pleasant.

Zanjan: Nonsense. I follow that rule and people still give me hassle, heartache, lies and cheatin'. What's pleasant about that? Have you driven a car in the city lately, especially in rush hour??

I think you missed the rule's purpose. You make it sound like boot-licking; God doesn't want you to be a Sycophant.

Zanjan: How I want to be treated is probably different in some ways than how you'd like to be treated.

I want people to speak to me politely, even when they're angry. I want them to tell me the whole, unbuttered truth as they see it in their own eyes, point blank, no matter how cruel it is. Yet I'd also like them to respect personal confidentiality, even when unasked.

I'd like to be treated fairly but since I don't expect or ask for that because this world isn't a fair place to be, I'd want them at least to be honest in their dealings with me. If I ask them a question, I want them to acknowledge and answer it, not walk away or dismiss it.

I'm sure I could make a long list of how I'd like to be treated that others might find repulsive.

ghostgeek: The problem with commandments is getting people to obey them. The God of the Bible certainly didn't manage it. Perhaps the old fart should have had a strategic rethink, but no, all He could think of doing was dish out even more rules and regulations. This God fella sure seems one dim schmuck.

Zanjan: Yes, obedience is difficult when one chooses a teaching to live by that's NOT a divine Commandment. The Golden Rule is not a Commandment.

For example, I want my survivors to bury me a casket, in a plot in the ground. Thus, I want this for others. You, on the other hand, might want to be cremated; thus you'll want it for those you're responsible to place at rest. This is quite problematic, you see - we'd each find the other's treatment of our remains repulsive.

Now we're caught in a new dilemma to solve. Whereas, actual Commandments don't raise more questions than they answer.

Teachings and Rules, on the other hand, are guidelines, always applied with appropriate considerations and a few exceptions.

Zanjan: I'll answer part of it here: If you have no money to properly dispose of your body, you're thoughtlessly forcing someone else to come up with the cash, possibly putting them into debt for years to pay off the loan. How does your golden rule work in this instance?

XFixYourBrainX: I heard there was a case study done on people, 2,000 to be exact were asked when they went into cardiac arrest and who declared technically dead until they were able to be revived. These people were immediately asked a series of questions.

As many as a few dozen people said they were happy and in a joyful state before they were brought back to life.

I'm not sure if someone has pointed this out as yet but:

The ten commandments were not the only laws believed to be sent by the Abrahamic God. There are the Mosaic Law and many others. Are you sure you want to follow these laws as they were stated? If so gather your stones. It's mega-morphing-stoning-time.

HEBREWS chapter 4 seems to be over looked.. As the SABBATH enjoyed by ADAM & EVE will exist as long as this world EXISTS. The SABBATH will be in THE EASRTH MADE NEW and on into ETERNITY .

Zanjan: If a person can't follow the simplest, most basic rules of good character, how will he/she be able to climb the stairs to more advanced rules? This is why they're held back - not by belief but by 'self', which chains them to the lowest grade of existence. They can't go where others can go.

When Moses delivered the 10 commandments, He delivered them to adults. Three and a half thousand years later, there's no point in citing these basics to anyone except school children.

calybonos: The 10 commandments are only a prelude to us climbing the stairs to more advanced rules?

Something has to be done about this. In these days of total accessibility, isn't it a law that there should be an elevator or something for the people in wheelchairs?
