edmund_carey: Why wouldn't Jesus use a Scripture that includes the Apocrypha? The Essenes included it in the Dead Sea Scrolls. It has often been suggested that Jesus may have been connected with the Essenes. John the Baptist too.

The real question is: did Jesus know Greek?

Zanjan: At that time, common Jews in various countries, especially Egypt, had forgotten Hebrew so they'd read the Septuagint.

But Jesus was a Rabbi - He read in the synagogues and the Temple in the Holy Land, where Hebrew was still treasured by scholars. However, Aramaic had long before replaced Hebrew as the language of the Jews.

Why would Jesus read a translation when there's nothing better than the original? The original language would have one thinking very differently. Mind you, ancient Hebrew was a tiny language, the reason for its demise, but parts of the OT had already been translated to Aramaic.

I'm thinking Jesus had to be fluent in at least three languages, given His tendency to mix with folks at all levels of society. When He was teaching ordinary folks, quoting from the Old Testament, He could just do an instant translation Himself. It would be perfect.
