Zanjan: It's a profession of faith. Every religion of God has one, except this one isn't performed by habit, ritual or communal utterance.

As one of the five pillars of Islam, each Muslim has a duty to recite this verse with a special purpose in mind: "“there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” There is a second part where they say "none has the right to be worshipped except God"

The Shiah Muslims add a third phrase" Ali is the wali of God" - meaning, God's helper/friend. Ali was Muhammad's son-in-law, who was supposed to lead the community after Muhammad's passing.

The Shahada is only performed in front of witnesses: First, to identify themselves (as a new believer) and, second, to serve as their testimony - most Wills these days omit the testimony portion but the faithful don't do that.

The Shahadah, if possible, should be the last words on their lips when they die. If not possible, someone should whisper it into their ear as they die. A father also whispers it into the ear of his newborn child.
