Space Travel

buddylee100: Is anyone disapointed that space travel has not progressed in the manner of the movie 2001, A Space Odyssey?

john1576: One of the problems is that manned space flight to the other planets in the solar system will be very expensive, and would amount to little but 'Space Tourism'. Any where else is out of the question. Also American Tax Payers have Bank Rolled the worlds major space events. Americans today are pressed for cash. At some point America may lead a coalition of nations to the planets, but again you are faced with a real problem of justifying the expense. NASA sees more oportunities for other enterprises such as permanent manned space stations and Moon bases, which would all have a pay off they could show the American public. But a trip to Jupiter like 2001? Try telling NASA you could sell that to 'Joe Six Pack'.

LiptonCambell: What?? Four of the Five astronauts die in that movie- sounds like a disaster to me.

>>>One of the problems is that manned space flight to the other planets in the solar system will be very expensive, and would amount to little but 'Space Tourism'

-IF- it were possible that we were to make nearby planet habitable, then it certainly would pay for itself- Corporations would send armies of families up there to estiblish a claim.

As for a trip to Jupiter- why bother? Its too big, as as you get closer you get bathed in the planets raditation.....

Look3r2010: Well, U can thank the government 4 not allowing the space program 4 not progressing the way it should. It would be a lot farther along then it is right now if it had the nec. funding that it needed 2 do what it should 2 go where it needs 2 go. But since the government would rather spend millions of dollars on a war that is turning out 2 B another Vietnam then so B it.

LiptonCambell: First off, they're spending BILLIONS, not Millions, on current wars.

Secondly, what is nessary about space travel? Colonizing other planets is important, but its not just a matter if sending out a ship and landing it on another planet- alot of the problems we face aren't going anywhere, and we've got to solve them before any of this is viable

Look3r2010: how can U say that space travel is not important, Riddle?
We have learned most if not all we can on Earth. The only thing left to learn is out there, in space.

Riddler_This: What do you mean? What is it we can learn with a human that we cannot learn with a computer?

We don't need to send humans into space because all of our instruments can detect and read everything that we can think of. Humans in space is not only costly, it is also dangerous.

NASA, along with four other space agencies, all have their own independent moon colonization plans set up, so I suppose you could consider that a step towards humans-in-space.

Look3r2010: Robots/computers can only do so much, learn so much. If we truly wish to learn what it is like out into space we need to go there. Just like back when people were sailing the new seas or visiting new parts of the Earth. they went there personally. That is the only real way to do anything, to experience anything.

LiptonCambell: Yea, but its not like what happens in space is a mystery- we need time to advance in our technology- things like speed, safety, and ecconmic concerns- right now it simply costs too much, offers too little, and takes too long- and we have the ability to tackle these issues without leaving our planet

To say we need to be in space to advance in space travel is like saying people should have rowed their canoes out to the oceans, and attempt to build a ship capible of crossing the Atlantic.

frayfray: I think the next phase of space exploration will be by private enterprise. It will take money, but it can be done. The space elevator they are proposing would be a significant step in reducing the cost of engineering spacecraft in orbit. I wonder what the future will hold in the next fifty years.

Naboo_the_Enigma: Space travel and exploration is a waste of time and money.
The bible and god has already set out a model for the cosmos and mans place within it.
The model of cosmology that God has provided has already put earth and man in the center of it, so therefore the bible provides all the information we need.
Jesus will return in a second coming and and there will be an apocalypse. This world will pass away and Christ will return.
Upon his return he will re-organize the Cosmos for our benefit (too arrogant and egocentric?)

Or maybe Christians would view space travel as another chance to burn, kill, slash, proselytize and force their beliefs upon unsuspecting aliens races.

Space travel as of yet is pretty fruitless though, until technology and cost can reach a lower equilibrium.

You also mentioned somewhere that u lecture? O really? Do they hire u at local hospitals as an alternative to anaesthesia?
If you consider urself somewhat of an intellectual, and this is the best that the American Education system can churn out then no wonder American Gladiators was the number 1 TV show for over 10 years.

My gaydar has also been activated! Are u sure u have no homosexual leanings, because u sure do use a lot of uneeded flamboyance in ur languuage?

Scientifically speaking, it has been proven that when someone recedes to using foul language and insults, typically it is because they are aware they are wrong and feel insecure and inferior to another.

Naboo_the_Enigma: Wtf is a self-proclaimed christian even doing in a science forum?? I once remember u saying that Athiests had no right to comment in a religious forum.

Scientifically speaking, it has also been proven that when someone continously bashes homosexuality they have a deep rooted insecurity about their own sexuality, which has been repressed by years of brow beating from religous nut-jobs.

Leave the science to the grown-ups and free-thinkers of the world. Go back to ur cave and conjure up another bile filled rant about how much u hate 'athiests'.
