techno_hedonist: Okay, this source does mention returning astronauts to the moon in the 2020s, but no mention of colonization plans. Do we have the same understanding of colonization?

It also links to an article on the dismally underfunded Vision for Space Exploration initiative that quotes Buzz Aldrin as saying that a new manned mission to the moon is "more like reaching for past glory than striving for new triumphs". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vision_for_Space_Exploration

I wonder if his opinion has changed given the discovery of ice in the southern pole of the moon?

Outback John: Moon sure...one day...there is water (in ice there) So it can be done.

I would say before the end of the century.

Stars well too far away (not that you would want to burn up going to one) Themo- nuclear explosions tend to be hot.
But i get the drift (new earth like worlds near other stars)

But pokerman Consider our nearest star is some4 and a half Light years away (a light year is travelling 186,000 kilometers a second for a whole year)

The Moon is 2 seconds away (in light year terms)

No creditable scientist believes conventional space craft could go to any other star regions.

At present rates it would take 20,000 years to get there as opposed to say Mars in our own solar system which might take 2 years.

Its a romantic thought and possible but not for thousands of years at best hundreds.

Building a space craft to travel to new worlds in other star regions is for now fiction.

Mars in our own solar system?

That is a different story.

XFixYourBrainX: man had always dreamed about flying, so the Wrights Brothers invented the airplane in 1903, man wanted to learn how to fly again but without wings like an airplane so man invented the jetpack in the 1950's and that technology was very much ahead of its time. Nasa has actually just created a new type of rocket called Ares I, its the next generation of launch vehicles that will return humans to the moon and later take them to Mars and other destinations.

There is technology in the development right now that will make it possible to play in a hologram type video game world. This technology was only to be thought possible in the movies and tv shows such as; star trek where they have a holodeck which is a video type real life game. This was once fiction, but soon it will be reality!!!

XFixYourBrainX: It doesnt have to be the now Russians of the former Soviet Union, to start a new space race with the USA. The United States are involved with so many things in this world I'm sure if China which has been very prosperous, and is growing in wealth exponentially not JUST, because of the debt we owe them. But because of the ease it is to start a business there and how much export is going out of there country. The first assumption everybody comes to when it comes to China is the debt we owe them. Is this the only thing that we know about China?

But besides that, before there is to be a New Space Race between America, Japan, Russian, or even China The International Space Station has to be finished. Not to long from now astronauts will be able to have running water that will be able to be recycled and they will be able to stay in the Space Station for longer periods of time, which will lead to eventually living up there. After the Space Station is finished I wonder what will be next?

Outback John: Pokerman with all due respect its very silly to compare conventional distances within our solar system and the progress of mankind ....to science fiction of going to the stars as remotely possible .

Quote pokerman
This is a great goal that will take the human race to the stars and it couldn't come at a better time.
Unquote.

As i mentioned the sheer distances means we could never attempt this dream with conventional craft.

Ok lets look at it another way.

The moon is say a 3-4 day journey for us to undertake.

But the stars are billions of times as far away.

Or Say 125 billion days travel.

Lest say we develop new space craft and going 100 times quicker or even 1000 miles a second.

That is still in the realm of science fiction but say we achieved that ?

It still takes a billion days to get there. or 1,000,000,000 divided by 365 days (a year)
remember a 1000 years is 365,000 days , 10,000 years is 3 million 650,000 days

1 million years is 365 million days

So even if we achieved a 100 times quicker space travel it would take us 3 million years to go to our nearest star zone closest to us (some 4.5 light years away)

Star trek and shows like those are good fun.

But Pokerman this is a science thread and what your feeding up is just great imaginative dreams.

I hope this helps you understand better

XFixYourBrainX: I would like to point out that I did not say with the conventional craft of today that would take us humans to distant stars or planets. Besides why would one want to go to a star, which is a sun, when one can go to a planet. Im not just talking about distant stars or planets, but even the ones that we have in our own Solar System which we still not have very much information about them. Somethings that we know about planets are assumptions about them from a scientists point of view, but not all the things that we know about the planets and other objects in our Solar System are assumptions. Don't assume that I was talking about conventional space craft, and then say that is what i was saying, its rude and annoying.

XFixYourBrainX: Showertime I do see you rational explanation of things, I think that you don't see the examples that I have presented to you. Yes, it would be very silly to use conventional spacecraft to travel to distant stars. Im glad you brung this up, because I didnt say anything about traveling to the stars with conventional spacecraft, but only as a goal which will eventually inevitably will lead us to the stars, as long as we humans have a desire and a will to want to go to the stars, or planets, and it does not even have to be to either of these it could just be to explore our solar system, or even eventually our galaxy. Remember we had to explore our own oceans first to map them out so that we knew where we were giong, before the New World could be found by Christopher Columbus. Remeber this is just an example take it lightly, with my regards of sincerity. With the new technology that nasa is developing right now its a first step towards exploring the rest of our solar system. Like I said before it was only a dream to go to the moon and guess what back in 1969 we went to the moon with a man, unlike the Soviet Union they sent Sputnik, which was a robot. Man has always had dreams, if it was to go to the moon in 1969, if it was to fly like the Wrights Brothers in 1903, or even develop technology to make things invisible, which is in the development right now, and a prototype has been made and is being refered to as a cloak, you should read about the invisible technology youself. These things I have just said were dreams at one time, all man had to do was dream, and think about it then it could become a reality. This I DO NOT THINK YOU UNDERSTAND, but it is ok if you don't some people can not and will not grasp the reality of this. I like how you say science fiction, but yes going to the moon was once science fiction, but now its a reality, I hope that you understand this.

Yes, that is a very nice quote I thank you for pointing it out! This goal that I spoke of is the goal of creating technology that will eventually lead us to the stars, but as of this moment in time we do not have the technology to take us to the stars, but the planets ah ha yes!

Yes, Star Trek is great entertainment, but look at the time that the first series came out, most of the things that were shown in Star Trek are not real! But one day these things in the show could be real, but they may have different names, and meanings behind them when the technology shown in the Star Trek episodes maybe one day become reality. The nano technology that was shown is now real, once it was fiction, the holodeck on any of the Star Trek's were a type of real life video game, the technology for this is already in the making, go and read this for youself, and once this was fiction, but now the technology is in the workings. Do you see what I'm getting at here? I hope so, because the math that you did is something that I could care less about, in connection to traveling to the stars, because that information is not needed right now with our conventional spacecraft and technology at this moment in time. It will be many years before we can start to worry about the years it will take to get to the stars, because remember like you said, with the conventional spacecraft that we have right now its only fiction!

XFixYourBrainX: Your wikipedia source is lacking credibility almost any professor, Dr. that is a teacher at a high school or university will say that the wikipedia is not a very accurate source, because of how easily it can be manipulated and changed. Therefore I will have to discredit that source. As of your video it's from the discovery channel, yes the discovery channel is nice, but its only a video from their point of view. Also the video is a bit outdated, are you sure your not still stuck in the 1950's where all these things are still fiction to you? With all seriousness as I said this, my apologies with the unmost sincerist regards if you were offended.
