Most atheists dont know about science (Page 2)

Whippersnapper
Whippersnapper: I think it all comes down to what we like to rub up against. Lights on? Lights off?

True there are many scientists guilty of scientism, but those blokes are the ones who have lost sight of reason. There are boatloads of atheists out there who are atheists for no reason, but real atheism has come from solid reasoning. Christopher Hitchen's book God is Not Great, How Religion Spoils Everything is one of those atheist books that maps out reason for us. I like his work because he is simply telling it how it is, unlike Richard Dawkins, Dog bless him, who tends to be a bit too preachy for me, but goes back to who we prefer to rub up against I guess.

chronology: I don't know a single person who thinks religion is a serious subject, (apart from a few mentally ill people). Everyone is convinced by their own experience that if there is a god it makes no difference one way or the other to them. They just see church goers as dickheads having the piss taken out of them by clergy. They don't need science to tell them that, they see it every day. Anyone who reads the religion Forum on this site would be convinced all the contributors are sat in State mental institutions.

engi_sony: Chrono: I am very much interested in knowing about religions.
It is for spiritual quest to seek some answers of life.
I don't look at religion as just GOD concept, going to church and all.
I have lot of interest in metaphysics.

XFixYourBrainX: Poeple consider science as a religion.

Why?

Because just like christianity they are both trying to find out the truth.

What is the truth?

Well that is not entirely known at the moment, but it doesnt hurt to try and find out, let it may be through science or religion.

Metaverseguy: Religion is different than science. Religion says it has the answer and it is God, therefore they stop looking. Science uses hypothesis and asks questions to come to a conclusion and they look for EVIDENCE.

chronology: Guys, you are missing the point of what a 'scientist' is. A scientist is any one who carries out an experiment. Your Mom is a scientist when she tries out a new recipe, you are a scientist when you mix a new flavour in your vodka or whisky. You all made an experiment, you analysed the result.

However, professional scientists who work for N.A.S.A. or Boeing etc, have to conduct experiments according to Internationally agreed standards if they are to receive acceptance of their results gained in an experiment.

Scientists using the International Standards simply cannot give you an answer as to whether there is or is not a God. Science as a community has no use for God in explaining the Universe. They are convinced they have all the facts they need to explain Life, God is not one of them. Some scientists disagree with this assumption, saying there are still many anomalies in life.

xxzero: "What is the truth?"

let's put the question this way..
can we handle with the absolute truth ?..

i don't think so..it's too big for our tiny human brains..

Whippersnapper: too big for our tiny human brains?

Umm I hate to break it to you, but we are the only creatures around with brains this amazing. What brains are you comparing ours to anyways? Human progess is a testament to how incredible our tiny brains are. Oh . . . sorry, I forgot about that city in France that is populated entirely by super intelligent elephants and blue whales.

Did you all know that Einstein was not human? He was actually a mushroom that happened upon the truth.

Wake up Spongebob! Truth is a pretty simple concept.

engi_sony: agreed xxzero...truth is relative rather than absolute...atleast for us humans with our limited capability of 5 senses and inefficient use of brain. We can just attempt to discover few perceptions of truth. Absolute truth is difficult, if not impossible to comprehend with limited human capability and traditional way of thinking.

Since mind starts getting conditioned from the day we are born, it is as such very difficult to break the barriers of traditional thinking and attempt new avenues. [out-of-box thinking]. This fact also blocks most humans from realizing even few simple perceptions of truth.

As far as human progress is concerned, looking at the current state of world in every aspect, it is ridiculous to boast that our brains are amazing.

Metaverseguy: We all accept that one day we will die, some of us aren't afraid because we suspect there is an afterlife, others aren't afraid because they live every moment like it's their last. Personally, I've accepted death and I don't think there is an afterlife. It is sad and maybe one day with improved medical advances we can prolong our lives more, but for now it's inevitable. Honestly in times in extreme boredom 80 - 90 years of life seems like far too long.

Whippersnapper: Man, I guess I got served there.

I knew someone would talk about the state of the world and make some naive comment. You kind of missed my point. Is there another more advanced brain that has made the human one seem so small and inadequate? What are you using to base your judgement on? God's brain? Does God have a brain?

If I were a zombie I would daydream about eating God's brain.

I think most people don't really know how to use improve their brain's performance to begin with. (Example: George W. Bush was elected for 2 terms). I don't think IQ is the best thing in the world, but people should care about expanding their brains just like they should care about their health.

For right now we are still the most intelligent beings in the world. Artificial intelligence hasn't been invented and computers can't compare to the complexity of the human brain yet. I'm not going to lecture people on how to expand their use of the brain, but it's easy to pick up books on increasing brain use at the bookstore or anyone can read Brain Building by Marilyn vos Savant (she has the highest IQ on the planet).

End-results matter....what use of is an intelligent brain if we end up in a mess.

..maybe cockroach is more intelligent than us humans ...it has developed such fine ability to survive under any condition.

CandyRivers: What a brain has over the computer is it's adaptability.

The father of computational neuroscience is a guy called Donald Hebb. His model of neurons that get activated at the same time form a stronger bond. Or the simple way of putting this is neurons that fire together wire together.

This principle has been adopted in early neural networks like the multi layer peceptron and Kohonen networks (not going to explain them here as I am lazy - google it if you can be arsed).

Hebbian learning is so much more than that though. It is the underlying mechanism for the major schools of pychology and philosphy. It is how we become we. It hints at the nature of our consciousness and it so simple in its delivery, so beautifully crafted and so profound a theory.

You want to know why you are you - check out Hebbian Theory.

Whippersnapper: What an arrousing concept there Candy, but you are an atheist, and most atheists don't know about science. Most atheists believe what they do because they are afraid to actually think . . . . wait a minute, I forgot to pray this morning! I wondered where those gay feelings came from. I spent like two hours graba$$ing at the mall before I snapped out of it and got some conservative lunch. I gobbled a footlong s#@#w%@-dog slathered in mayonaise from the Hungry Gobbler. That place is my favorite of wiener shacks. Really! Some of the most well hung tubesteaks in town! Banger heaven.

What led me to be an atheist was not the idea that religion is pure nonsense unsupportable by any reasonable argument. Actually, I am an atheist because an angel visited me and told me I would contract venereal warts if I didn't tell everyone there wasn't a god. So screw you religionists with your real science and hot vibrant crotch poundage! You think I want VD? No chance.

I am aware of the LHC - but you know I am a bit too much of a duffer to totally understand what the higgs Bowson particle does.

I am aware that it is the stuff that makes everything into stuff - but I couldn't write an essay on it.
