What is this "science" of which you speak? (Page 7) spankdmonkey: Our Science is pretty ordinary ,Because at the end of the day its the universe that decides our fate .Unless of course we collonise other planets and other solar systems looking at ways to spread the human race throughout it, and even then it is still up to the elements if we survive or not . archana krishnan: science is something that gives a complicated definition for simple n natural things! BAADC0DE: Science isn't made up as we go along, it has and always will consist of only 4 things. #1 - Observe something #2 - Try to explain the observation #3 - Use the explanation to make a prediction #4 - Test the prediction as many times as you want. If it fails just one time, the explanation is false. If the prediction is untestable, then nothing is gained. If the prediction succeeds or fails, then "sciencia" is gained which is the Latin word for knowledge. (Edited by BAADC0DE) CoIin: @ BAADCODE This is somewhat misleading. Empiricism (i.e. experimentation/observation) and hypotheses have always been joined at the hip in science. However, the role of the leader has changed over the centuries. These days it tends to be the hypotheses which do the pulling and the role of experimentation/observation is confirmational. The model you offered might fit "kitchen science". It doesn't fit the current trend of "big science". The guys with the particle colliders, for example, don't just crash things together and see what happens. Any experiments are conducted with the aim of confirming/falsifying a hypothesis. Of course, sometimes the results are unexpected and new hypotheses, or tweaking of existing hypotheses, may be required. (Edited by CoIin) a_Robin: Science... Is ideas about the world, Its the constant "laws" that we trust in because they have not yet been disproved. BenevolentPeckerwood: "A scientist is one who understands nothing until there is NOTHING LEFT to understand." --Mutant leader in The Omega Man. "A scientist is one who makes the assumption that physics can explain everything, much in the same way that a person of faith makes the assumption that it cannot." --Me Coastwind: Then the human mind to verify or sadly science can't exist, the ol if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound. | Science Chat Room 1 Person Chatting Similar Conversations |
