Whats your opinion on Mermaids (Page 3)

jimeeze1
jimeeze1: I saw the documentary on mermaids again and even knowing that it was produced by actors and cleverly put together some of the things said really rang true....like why do we have small webs in our hands and why can we hold our breath longer than any other mammal .....how do peeps close their pupils to see better under water....why is our backbone so flexible...is it possible that they are really portraying the views of someone with knowledge that does not want to come forward and reveal their insight....a lot of what was said made sense even though we know it was just a staged scenario....this doesn't mean I believe in mermaids but just the possibility that some creature deep under our oceans that resembles us is so intriguing ...we need to keep in mind that a mere 50 years ago I was looking at a 12" black and white television screen with 2 channels and using a rotary dial telephone and with all our technology have only visited a minute amount of ocean....we know more about other solar systems than we do our own oceans.....every day a new species of animal or plant and bacteria is being found....the story aint over yet folks.....but I cant stand the omnipotence of some peeps that think they are goddeses and all seeing all knowing.....your ego is really showing!

Corwin: "why can we hold our breath longer than any other mammal "

Seriously?? Ummmm...... no.
There are seals that can hold their breath for over 30 minutes, and Sperm Whales can hold their breath for an hour and a half (just to name a few). The average Human will not even make it to 3 minutes before losing consciousness.

Mammals all carry a recessive gene to produce webbed hands and feet... something we carried with us from our reptilian ancestors from hundreds of millions of years ago... simply because it can still come in handy. Polar bears evolved from Grisly Bears, and the webbed paws were a useful adaptation to help cross vast stretches of ocean between ice flows.
We also carry the gene to grow a tail... but it's not a fish tail, it's a monkey's tail.

Why wouldn't our backbones be flexible? Considering that we only climbed down out of the trees about 5 million years ago, you'd think a flexible spine would come in handy. If Primates didn't have flexible spines, it wouldn't have been such a simple matter for us to evolve towards an upright gait. And also consider that the first Primates evolved from something very cat-like, and cat's have one of the most flexible spines of all mammals (far more flexible than most aquatic species of vertebrate).

I'm not saying that there isn't more life under the sea that is yet to be discovered... but I AM saying that a half fish/half man species is IMPOSSIBLE. Study up on Taxonomy and you'll see why this is so.

Corwin: Oh, something else to consider... aquatic mammals have to come up for air... we're not likely to find a new one in the deep unexplored depths. And we no longer carry a recessive gene to grow gills, like we do the gene to grow webbed hands and feet.

LiptonCambell: ACK! Corvin beat to me to the 'humans hold their breath the longest' comment....

Hippos are also an excellent example of a typical mammal holding their breath longer than the best human

>>>like why do we have small webs in our hands

You mean that piece of skin between our fingers? The finger crotch?

You're talking about a piece of skin that's less than a 1/8th of an inch in size....it's like that so we can use your fingers individually- if it was any tighter, you would be incapable of pointing....

I mean, how else would you expect it to look?

>>>why is our backbone so flexible...

Because it's advantageous to have it so, and the mammals that didn't have one died out a long time ago....

I mean, shit, I'm surprised you aren't asking why we can swim, and suggesting that's evidence of something...

>>>how do peeps close their pupils to see better under water

You mean the thing damn near every animal out there can do?

How is that evidence of humans are connected to mermaids, if EVERY animal has that trait. That would mean wolves are also connected to mermaids.

Dude, they're using misleading and fallacious reasoning. You shouldn't be looking at a video like that, and try to figure out what secret message they're trying to convey- you should use it as an exercise to help yourself identify future misleading and fallacious reasoning....because that video was bullshit- you knew it was bullshit, and they told you several times that it was bullshit.

>>>is it possible that they are really portraying the views of someone with knowledge that does not want to come forward and reveal their insight

So lemme get this straight;

They present misleading and outright incorrect information, all while clearly telling the viewer it's for entertainment purposes and not at all true- and you believe it's actually a grand conspiracy?

So then why use the misleading and incorrect information to begin with?

>>>a lot of what was said made sense even though we know it was just a staged scenario

Just because something sounds good doesn't make it true!

>>>every day a new species of animal or plant and bacteria is being found....the story aint over yet folks

I agree completely- but the real discoveries are going to be made OUT THERE- not in your living room, as you quietly ponder all the strange lifeforms you assume there probably are.

>>>.but I cant stand the omnipotence of some peeps that think they are goddeses and all seeing all knowing.....your ego is really showing!

You're the one insisting a creature exists BECAUSE YOU PERSONALLY BELIEVE IT TO, rather than there being EVIDENCE of it's existence.

I believe there is a world out there beyond my personal thoughts and beliefs, that existed long before I was born and will continue to exist long after I'm dead. It's nothing but ego to think something should exist because you believe it should, and it's nothing but arrogance to condemn others for not blindly following your convictions

Oh, and I did some research, and you are WRONG. The Lucky Charms leprechaun IS TOO a real thing.

"Cartoon" she says.

LiptonCambell: I feel we need to explain ourselves to Jim a little more clearly;

Its not that I, or Corvin, believe that we know everything- we don't, and we could be incredibly wrong about everything we post here- but the --method-- you use to forming an opinion and finding truth is just as important as your conclusion.

At the very worst, you could say we are uncompromising- because we place evidence above belief- but what would happen if we cast aside such an uncompromising belief? If we took all beliefs equally, and we're completely openminded?

We would have to accept anyone who forms an opinion, regardless of the facts. We would have to take on direct contradictions, and live our lives with our beliefs in opposition.

The method of how you form your beliefs is important. And believing in something because it sounds nice, despite there being no evidence for the existence of a thing, will only lead you to ruin. You need only look at human history to see that. Dragons, Pixies, Sea monsters, Bigfoot, Aliens- all of these are based on the same reasoning- that good ideas are more important than facts.

calybonos: Mermaids are a lot like having a sense of humor.

Some people are open to the possibilities, or at least the fun that can be had in not taking things so seriously, while others can't join in, and choose to take offense.

Life can be a tough swim for people who hate to get their feet wet.
