I guess we can put that one on the back burner.

Former President, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson said ""The time for Katla to erupt is coming close ... we have prepared ... it is high time for European governments and airline authorities all over Europe and the world to start planning for the eventual Katla eruption". Guide to Iceland claims.

Indeed the post war eruptions seem to coincide with cold winters in the UK right up to 2010.

Serious storm were also present near both localities.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center says its data for Arctic Sea ice is erroneous from the 19th of Feb. Perhaps its software is down or it doesn't believe what it is seeing.

" The NWS initially warned of a "historic and crippling" winter storm that will significantly impact all of southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska panhandle, adding that "widespread blizzard conditions" would make travel "dangerous or impossible."

lol!,

..Its been fairly cold without much sunshine where I am and SWE is predicting another week of cold weather for Europe.

The old PV has been stuck on the northern shore of Russia for a couple of weeks now and seems to be spilling Arctic air on all sides.

It suddenly scooted across from near Canada about the time of your big earthquakes; if that caused them or was a result I don't know.

Lets see when the southern PV gets going after this one has disappeared

The Snow and Ice Data Centre is up and running and is quite cheerful,...

".Throughout the month, sea ice grew by an average of 9,900 square kilometers (3,800 square miles) per day, roughly half the average rate over the period 1981 to 2010 of 20,300 square kilometers (7,800 square miles per day). "

Sir Loin: I don't really keep up to date with what's happening in your hemisphere however Antarctic sea ice hasn't been shrinking at anything like the doom and gloom merchants have been predicting, in fact the Ross Ice Shelf has been expanding enough for the Adelie penguins to be forced to move their nesting grounds out towards open water. The daily trek across the ice to their fishing grounds was getting too far and chicks weren't surviving.
I can't see any connection between PV and our earth movements, all the quake epicentres are along the same faultline along the West Pacific rim. We get 100+ shakes per day but dont feel most if they're less than force 4.
Interesting times if you're an earth scientist

Eruptions causing lots of smoke and ash from Mount Etna could cause a colder summer in Europe by blocking the sunlight.

https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/current-activity.html

It seems the volcano has been erupting regularly every two or three days and if it goes on will create a lot of pollution. I seem to remember that when Etna has regular repeated eruptions like this it has something to do with the ocean.

Iceland also looks like its going for another round of eruptions with the earthquake rate picking up today as well,...

https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/reykjanes.html

...with 13 smaller ones between 2 and 3 already there must be some risk of a lot of dust in our skys soon.

Sir Loin: Good point Dunc. When Pinotubo erupted in Philippines in 1991 an average 1.5C temp drop ocurred around the world, even in the southern hemisphere which surprised me as I thought the ITCZ would prevent ash moving down here at high level.
I've noticed skies on clear days lack the deep cobolt blue colour now and have become a paler dusty blue, same as happened in 91. We're just moving into winter down here, I have a feeling it's gonna be a cold one and I'm gonna be grateful for the new logburner I'm installing and the huge load of firewood I cut this summer

Its looks like the connection between volcanoes and extreme weather is more real than expected even if historians have sometimes mention it before.

I meant the local weather as in that quarter of America or some around islands. People were said to have noticed the air being still for days before an eruption.

It looked like the winds had taken a sharp turn and a ribbon of clouds stretched from Florida to Iceland.

The North Pacific Polar Vortex has started to form again perhaps as the old PV is starting to break up.

Maybe these things are connected ??

Etna has been erupting regularly,...VolcanoDiscovery now has a live video and some of the eruptions look spectacular,..

https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/current-activity.html

... and that seems to show that something is stopping the gradual flow of the magna, and that is probably seawater pressure. The fact that the lava is being held back and then overcomes the resisting force is an unstable state for a volcano and means it will either violently erupt or violently collapse.

"....air pressure void might trigger an eruption that was on the brink...."

We have seen that happen in Iceland a while back and agreed the very low barometer pressure of the extreme storm did contribute. I thought it was last year.

kittybobo34: For volcano's like Etna, I think steam is the driving force. As the plate gets subducted under the crust of the other plate, it carries lots of water with it, which tends to push lava and sometimes with explosive force. Iceland and Hawaii however is a different beast. there the plates are separating, and due to a hot spot underneath from the outer mantle. This causes an even steady flow of magma with very little in the way of gasses. Yellowstone is a super volcano that is a combination of both.. When that goes all of mankind will feel it in one way or another.

Steam was the key to other types of eruptions Etna had; it allowed all the magma to move up scientists/engineers have said.

Now something is holding it back for for two days at a time and has done so fifteen times already.
